Goodie.

Am looking forward to sending billions of aid down there and the inevitable John Edwards appearance.

Apparently the largest earthquake ever recorded happened in pretty much this same spot in 1960... a 9.5!!!! I've been in a few five pointers and seen stuff fly off my shelves. A 9.5 is virtually incomprehensible.

re: Chile hit with 8.8 Earthquake [Update: Hawaii Tsunami is boring]

Yeah, Hawaii is due to get hit with Tsunamis in about 6 hours (4:30 pm EST).

Japan, the Philippines, basically anything pacific facing (including California and Alaska - though not likely) are under alert.

Experts warned that a tsunami could strike anywhere in the Pacific, and Hawaii could face its largest waves since 1964 starting at 11:19 a.m. (4:19 p.m. EST, 2119 GMT), according to Charles McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Tsunami waves were likely to hit Asian, Australian and New Zealand shores within 24 hours of the earthquake. The U.S. West Coast and Alaska, too, were threatened.

A huge wave swept into a populated area in the Robinson Crusoe Islands, 410 miles (660 kilometers) off the Chilean coast, President Michelle Bachelet said, but there were no immediate reports of major damage.
"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the warning center said. It did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada.

The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the west coast of the United States.
Yeah ... 9.5 is crazy.

Yeah, I guess we'll be bailing them out too and not even get a "thank you" for it from the rest of the world.

re: Chile hit with 8.8 Earthquake [Update: Hawaii Tsunami is boring]

Here's a segment from a National Geographic "Ultimate Natural Disaster" show, depicting a massive tsunami hitting Honolulu:

Edited To Add: The NG video depicts a fictional 10-story high tsunami striking Honolulu. This is much MUCH higher than the 6-8 foot predictions I've seen in the media.

Stronger than Haiti. Not worse than Haiti.

Fortunately, they have a much better infrastructure in Chile.

Impact could be much more far-reaching though. We'll see how this plays out.

re: Chile hit with 8.8 Earthquake [Update: Hawaii Tsunami is boring]

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has announced the following predicted tsunami arrival times and heights for Hawaii:

11:05 HST (1605ET) Hilo (Big Island) - 2.5m
11:26 HST (1625ET) Kahului (Maui) - 2.0m
11:37 HST (1637ET) Honolulu (Oahu) - 0.5m
11:42 HST (1642ET) Nawiliwili (Kauai) - 0.9m

These are rough estimates, but the best that their simulations show at the moment with the updated info they currently have.

My brother-in-law works on a tour boat in Maui. His apartment is 2 feet above sea level. He and the captain are taking the boat out about 30 miles to avoid it being destroyed. They were told to expect between 5-12 feet waves on land.

Current death toll in Chile is 122, but that number is expected to rise.

Chile Quake Prompts West Coast Tsunami Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami advisory for the entire West Coast Saturday after a series of earthquakes struck off the coast of Chile overnight.

The weather service is advising everyone in coastal counties to stay away from beaches and shorelines this afternoon when a tsunami producing strong currents and a series of potentially dangerous waves is expected to hit the coast at around 1:20 p.m.

The advisory includes the Bay Area counties of San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Marin, Monterey, Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma, Santa Clara and Alameda.

re: Chile hit with 8.8 Earthquake [Update: Hawaii Tsunami is boring]

I'm really hoping it hits the Hilo side and not the Kona side. My house is not very far above sea level in Kailua Kona. Sucks being on the mainland and not on the island. I can only imagine the furry going on around there right now. People waiting in line for gas, Costco and Home Depot I'm sure are out of control about now.
