I believe my cat is preparing to die.

This is a sad thing. Alley is about 8 years old, and a part siamese mix. In her younger years she would leave for the summers and we would be lucky if we say her once a month. Then she would decide to winter with us. When my wife rescued another cat, Alley was the only one who would not attack her. She got pretty fat dining on field mice (presumably after bopping them on the head), but suddenly has lost a lot of weight. She is pretty bony now with loose skin hanging off her. Still incredibly soft and still sits on my chest as we watch tv every night. She didn't come home last night, and I thought that might be the last time I would see her, but she just showed up....just in time for another episode of DS9.

Anyway, I'm a little sad.

Is he planning to take a bullet for one of your horses?

One of the family cats died earlier this year. He was basically my cat. He actually followed me home years and years ago and we kept him. I was very sad to see him go, so I feel your pain.

My cat Geddy died the day before yesterday and I'm extremely saddened by the loss. It's a tough thing to deal with.

Re: I believe my cat is preparing to die.

Our last cat dropped a ton of weight before he died...two years before he died. He dropped from about 14 lbs to about 8 1/2 actually. It was pretty astounding.

Old cats sometimes do that. I wouldn't rush to any conclusions. Now if he starts hiding alot too, secluding himself, that might be a bad sign. Cats sometimes do that when they know they are very sick.

Eh, just get another one. They're super cheap and as replaceable as a broken lamp, (as I recall).

It could be a problem with digestion, maybe the cat ate some wild berries? Or it could be the kidneys, a urinary tract infection, etc.

kvrdave- Why not take it to your vet?

Preparing to die...as in updating his will, laying out his burial suit? Maybe leaving his wedding band with a note by the litterbox?

Re: I believe my cat is preparing to die.

8 years is pretty young for a cat to start its death dance. With the exception of a kitten of mine that died, all of my cats were over 15 when they went. It is never easy. I would suggest Alley has some form of kidney disease.

How about a trip to the vet? Is your cat vaccinated? If not, it could be something FiV or FiL or even diabetes. If nothing else, dave, if the cat is suffering, please spend the $40 and have the cat put down humanely. You have my number if you wanna talk.

But cats that spend a lot of time in the wild? Growing up on a farm, we always had between 5 and 15 cats, and if one lived to 7 or 8 years old that was a good long life. We fed them and gave them water all the time, but other than that they were on their own.

If Dave's cat was out in the wild on its own for extended periods of time, its lucky to have survived 8 years without having a coyote or something get it.

I just know that Kitty hatched an elaborate plan to poison KVR's cat so it gets sick and then she will offer a "sympathetic" hand/voice and allow KVR to call her.

If the plan (stage 1) works, she will move to stage 2: Poisoning Bandoman's pet turtle, offering a sympathetic hand and thus getting into his pants.

As any good conspiracy theory, the proof is the lack of evidence. The trail is covered well.

Bandoman, you are warned.

Maybe it just wants to die because it has to watch DS9.

Re: I believe my cat is preparing to die.

You should take the cat to a vet. One of my cats is pretty fat. He lost a lot of weight a few years ago, and it ended up being liver disease. I had to tube feed him for about a month, but he got better and gained it all back. He got diabetes a little after that, and lost some weight then too. That was about 4 years ago. He's still around, and as fat as ever.
