New Annoying Work Rule...

So the geniuses who make up the higher ups at my place of employment have decided that a strict security setting has to be implemented on all of the PCs in my area. Now, every 30 seconds of inactivity locks me out to where I have to re-log in. Keep in mind, I work in a private office, with low-traffic and accessibility. And the standard in my field is a setting of 5-10minutes...

I know this sounds like a petty issue, but I cannot even begin to describe to you how annoying and distracting this is...it is negatively affecting work productivity around here and driving me insane...

Anyways, I thought I would vent about it.... Anyone else have such draconian rules that make no sense? Any suggestions for a work around (other than using a piece of tape to press down one of the keys continuously)?

That would be annoying.

When productivity plummets, they'll rethink the decision.

There's probably a reason for the change.

You are right, that would

Lame.

30 seconds sounds absurd.

This policy would seriously interfere with the 32 second power naps I'm used to taking.

Hasn't "The Simpsons" taught you anything? The solution is simple:

Terrible rule. Unless you work in some super highly classified business. But it doesn't sound like it.

If you don't like it then why not quit your job and find another job?

Unfortunately, many in the IT community are clueless as to user experience.

Lol, I love it when people give this obnoxious response. Are people not allowed to vent about quirks at their place of business? Please.

Tellng someone to quit their job and find another one when unempoyment is so rampant is laughable.

^ This issue can be a dealbreaker for many. My first question during a job interview is how long I can sit idle at my desk without being forced to log in again.

My first questions are: "Are porn sites blocked? Even during my lunch break?"

Will the lock out activate if you are watching streaming video? Hulu may be your friend.

Because he's not completely stupid? Like that question is?

Well, at least you can send it to Dilbert.

Re: New Annoying Work Rule...

That is incredibly annoying. I say raise the issue to higher ups. Tell them it's negatively affecting productivity around the office and ask them to reconsider. Even if they only make a small change (30 seconds to 2 minutes) it would be much better for everyone.

Re: New Annoying Work Rule...

Or it could be a trap. If you complain they may ask why you feel the need to be idle for more than 30 seconds.

Re: New Annoying Work Rule...

Reading the company handbook... it takes more than thirty seconds to read a page, then you have to log in again!

Re: New Annoying Work Rule...

30 seconds?? this would make working with someone on the phone very difficult.

Example - you send someone some info - you have to wait for them to get it, open it, read it, comment on it.... now you have to log back in... go to where they are looking at, talk about it... log back in. (wash rinse repeat)

Re: New Annoying Work Rule...

That would drive me crazy...

Mine is forced to 30 minutes. Sometimes I work on a second system, but may be looking at a monitor from my main system and it's annoying enough when that logs me out. 30 seconds would be insane.

Sounds like an idiotic manager type decision.

 30 seconds!? That is insane! We do 15 minutes here...

Suggest to your bosses that 30 seconds is not safe enough. Imagine how safe 5 seconds would be!
