Apollo 11 - LIVE!

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum is "recreating" the entire Apollo 11 mission - LIVE - via the Internet.

www.wechoosethemoon.org

The website goes "live" at 8:02 am ET this Thursday (7/16), 90 minutes before launch. Events during the mission will unfold in real-time, with liftoff at 9:32, exactly 40 years to the minute after the real thing.

I grew up with the space program - Apollo 11 was 2nd grade for me - and I remember staying up late on July 20th to watch the live feed from the moon with my Mom and Dad. Admittedly few here are old enough to remember this first hand, but this recreation looks/sounds cool and if it delivers even half of what it promises it'll be great!

Re: Apollo 11 - LIVE!

Too bad this is what it takes for NASA to show a person on the moon these days.

So, essentially they're faking the moon landing.

Again.

Same here. I'll probably re-watch the Tomorrowland Disney Treasures set and the "Man on the Moon" documentaries before then just to set the stage.

Re: Apollo 11 - LIVE!

Less than 1 day until launch, and the Saturn-V is on pad 39-A.

The clock is up. T-minus 20h 11m and counting.

Re: Apollo 11 - LIVE!

Well, I may be the only Otter following this, but the website just went "live". We're at T-88 minutes and counting, and Mission Control just provided their first audio update. The video is still Flash-based, I'm not expecting anything like live video until the very end of the countdown, but just being able to hear what's happening is very very cool.

Re: Apollo 11 - LIVE!

The moon launches just seemed so much more exciting than the Space Shuttle. I grew up with the Space Shuttle, so I never saw the Apollo launches. It must have been an awesome sight. I think we took a huge leap backwards after Apollo, but we were spending 3% of our GDP on the lunar program. I'm excited that we're on a path to get back to the moon. The new Aries rocket is going to start testing at Cape Canaveral this fall. Man, capsules are not as sexy as a flying brick (Space Shuttle), but it's a whole lot cheaper.

I have been watching since you originally posted. THANKS FOR THIS!

BTW - I think my counter is one minute ahead of the actual. Announcer just said 4 minutes just as 5 minutes ticked off.

Ive been sitting here all morning, and 20 seconds to launch someone walks up needing help. Grrrr.

Shouldnt there be some chatter right now?

Re: Apollo 11 - LIVE!

The mission control audio WAS one minute out of sync, then it was cut off at about T-2 minutes. It didn't come back. The "launch" was Flash-based, but once the sequence completes and the site steps into the next stage of the mission, you can click a rollover to view actual archival video from a number of different locations and speeds.

Apollo 11 has jettisoned the first two stages and has entered Earth orbit. Trans-Lunar Injection (TLI) is in 2h 33m, or at approx 12:21 pm ET.

Re: Apollo 11 - LIVE!

Dang just found this a minute too late.

Oh well, I'm going to pull out all my space dvd's for the next few days. (Apollo 11 from Spacecraft Films will take a ton of time).
