Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

Are there any interesting moving companies that specialize in low expense moving services? I'm currently looking at either towing a trailer for 350 or renting one of their trucks for 1,000. What are my other options?
If I recall I heard or some company that drops off a trailer in which you fill, you call them and they pick it up and deliver it shortly... I can't recall what it's called though... Any help would be appreciated....

My friend used a PODS. They filled it up and they they shipped it to her house. She lived in Wisconsin and moved to N. Carolina

Those drop off and fill up services are expensive and tricky. There are a lot of weird fees that they don't tell you about till later. Well, there CAN be...I've had a couple friends that have used them and they were surprised by some of the extra things added to the bill. Just be careful.

I used Penske recently for a one-way truck rental and was pretty pleased at their rates. Specifically, when I did an online quote it gave me unlimited mileage which beats the 59-89 cents U-Haul and others sometimes charge.

When I moved to Texas from California, I used ABF Freight and their "HelpUMove POD thing. A big crate that you put your own locks on. They dropped it off in the parking lot, I filled it up and locked it and they came and picked it up and took it out to Texas for me. It cost me $1200 and with moving it 1865 miles - it was less than $1 a mile, so it was a good deal to me.

I only had a one-bedroom apartment worth of stuff to load in it, so it all fit in there!

Can't stand Uhaul...worse business model ever.

Try Budget and also try not to move in summer when everyone else is. Their rates vary like air fare based on demand.

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

I'd be moving a two bedroom apartment around 1,300 miles.
Uhaul price's are reasonable. I'm just not sure I want to toe that much stuff that far with my car.

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

i don't know here you live, but there are one way rental options if a truck or SUV would be sufficient.

if you happen to be currently in florida, then this may interest you:

I agree. I've rented from Penske twice and have nothing but good stuff to say about them!

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

I used Budget to move this month, but I stayed in the same city. No problems at all.

Also, try not to move on a Friday. They charge more. I moved on Sunday and paid 1/3 of the price.

I hope to move soon too so i'm looking at this myself. I recommend staying from U-Haul and try Budget's moving service.

I used www.upack.com. It was really easy to use and reasonable in price.

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

You have somebody besides yourself to help you move, right?

Consider renting a pickup truck or a minivan for five days or so, should be around $150 or so? (a guess) Then rent the trailor for $350. Have your friend drive your car there, then drive the pickup / van back.

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

For Christ's sake, don't use U-Haul, please. Use Penske or Budget instead.

If it's a local move, I'd use a local moving company that's rated well.

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

Penske is the best do it yourself company. Newer trucks that wont break down like uhaul and competitive prices. If you have AAA you get a nice discount. If you do an online quote and dont go through they usually send you a better offer a week or two later.

Re: Moving ideas other than Uhaul?

Another PODS-type company is http://www.doortodoor.com/moving/.

I've heard that they are cheaper than PODS, and they offer residence-to-city moving which reduces your cost. With that option, at the destination city, they don't deliver your goods to your residence, but you go to their storage location and unload your stuff yourself.
