Whatever happened to the Flesh Eating Virus?

This whole swine flu got me to thinking about past newsworthy "pandemics". The one that scared me the most was that Flesh Eating Virus. I was probably about 14 at the time, and every red bump or bruise on my body freaked me out. So what happened to it? Did it just disappear or was it just another overblown epidemic (like SARS)?

True, but the common street name was "Flesh Eating Virus."

Re: Whatever happened to the Flesh Eating Virus?

a friend (or maybe he's an acquaintance) of a friend of mine got somethign like this a few months ago. he got a bruise playing basketball and felt sick but didn't go to the doc until a couple of days later. They said he was infected with a bacteria that attacks flesh and destroys it and they had to amputate his leg before it spread to the rest of his body

Re: Whatever happened to the Flesh Eating Virus?

I guess the question now is: What's worse, flesh eating virus/bacteria, OR swine flu?

That's easy.

Lupus is far worse.

Step son had his leg amputated last year due to necrotizing fasciitis. It could have been much worse as he was in the hospital for a couple days before the doctors figured out what it was. Once it makes its way past your legs or arms you're pretty much screwed.

that was the link that came up for me in the thread where you find out what your rock band name is by generating a random article. Made me not want to start the band up.

Nec fas is still very common. We fly patients with it all the time.

Re: Whatever happened to the Flesh Eating Virus?

I was channel surfing at like 2 am the other night and there was an Oprah on about this. Had the woman that basically cut her finger while working as a chef and a day later had her right arm and breast remove and now has a very thin coat of see-thru skin where all that should have been.

They then mentioned a woman catching it after a C-section, she lost her arms and legs.

Re: Whatever happened to the Flesh Eating Virus?

It's still eating people. My friend's wife is a nurse and she sees people with it frequently. She said one woman came in and her side looked like hamburger meat. Ouch.
