Houston, Texas I45 South - What's going on?

Just got back to downtown Houston from Hobby Airport up I45. There were police cars at every on ramp and off ramp all the way into downtown. It wasn't weather related as I didn't see any high water on the frontage roads. In total I counted about 30 police cars (All HPD). Is there a VIP visiting the city? Anyone have any idea what's going on in Houston that would necessitate this type of effort from the police department?

From http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...n/6395973.html
This afternoon, the biggest traffic tie-up was caused by flooding that closed Interstate 45 southbound at Spring Stuebner on the north side. The freeway was at a virtual standstill behind the blockage.

I saw a picture from Houston Transtar where I-610 at I-45 was closed off by police cars. Still no idea what happened as the local media is more concerned with the weather.

Ok, last post from me... on the way home counted about 30 plus police cars on the frontage road and the actual freeway from downtown to Monroe (on I-45 South). A friend told me he saw a few police cars on the side of the road at I-45 and Bay Area Blvd. Strange...

it's the swine flu I tell ya. Even when it was the runaway semi-trucks or the flooding, I knew it was always the swine flu.

I find it amazingly unbelievable that local radio would not have any information on that.

Sounds like when Dick Chaney was in town a few years ago. They blocked all of the freeway entrances at rush hour to get him through quickly. Turned what should have been a 15 minute drive home from the airport into an hour-long wait. Big fun.

Two things, I remember when Dick Cheney was in town too. I happened to be along the route. This was much different. at 2:30 p.m. I counted approximately 30 police vehicles (an unusually large number of the HPD pick up trucks in fact) along the side of the freeway and along the frontage road. If you look here http://blogs.chron.com/sciguy/archiv...r_intense.html you'll see that the I-45 corridor received very little rain last night - and no rain since this morning. This was nor rain related.

The reason I'm fairly certain it wasn't related to a visiting dignitary is because three hours later the police cars were still there. I can understand them securing the route, but for three hours?

Not the flooding. Hasn't rained hard in these areas.

Most of the rain was in north & west Houston - Ellington is south Houston.

I still think it was the rain. Being from Orange County, I certainly know what's going in Houston.

Re: Houston, Texas I45 South - What's going on?

It was the rain. Water pretty much covered the entire freeway at Spring-Stuebner.

It was TERRIBLE trying to get to work anywhere north or northwest Houston. I tried for about 3 hours but encountered road blocks and high water route I took.

I finally gave up and went home, just a few miles south of Houston, where there was no high water and some people werent even aware of how bad it was just a a few miles north (my mom being one of them)!
