Fethry Duck from Walt Disney's

Hi

Just a quick question from a foreigner user ...

I know that "Fethry Duck" is a fictional character who appears in Walt Disney's comic book stories ... but ...

What does it mean the word "Fethry " in english?

Thanks

Never heard of Fethry Duck, but maybe it's supposed to sound like "Feathery" (as in lots of feathers)

Re: Fethry Duck from Walt Disney's

In my youth (late '80s early '90s) I was a pretty big fan of Disney Comics. I have never heard of Fethry Duck. It could be that they translate the character's name in your foreign market. Where are you?

The most common duck characters in Disney Comics would be:
Donald
Scrooge McDuck
Huey, Duey, Louie
Gyro Gearloose
Flintheart Glomgold

I am from Brasil.

Very popular character around here.

So ... the word fethry does not exit in english ... right?

I'm going to guess it's a translation issue too.

If the OP could post a pic of the critter in question, I'm sure someone could ID it.

Edit: Oops. Didn't see the link in 12thmonkey's post.

Yeah, "Fethry" is just a play on feathery, I imagine.

I always thought it was a comment on his mental state, since he is a bit of what we would call a "fluffhead".

Perhaps one of the popular Duck characters had a different name in other countries. You know how they rename films when released abroad?

That's very interesting, I've never heard of him, but as mentioned in the wiki article, he only appeared in a handful of US comic books in the 60's and otherwise only appeared in European and Brazilian Disney comics, so that's probably why. Oh well, as the article mentions, he wasn't created by Carl Barks and did not appear in any Barks comic stories, so die-hard Duck fans don't consider him a part of Duck family canon. Thus, I will forget that I learned of his existance.

This die-hard Duck fan does.

Look at the bottom of the Wiki article you reference, and you'll see that starting in 2003, Fethry stories began appearing domestically in the American comics. I was part of the Gemstone staff; we published a mixture of the classic 1960s stories—written and drawn by Americans but never previously printed here—and modern stories from both European and American creators.
We got a big kick out of rediscovering this lovably nerdy character, and while our readers were at first a bit suspect of a non-Barks figure, they took to him rather quickly. What, after all, would Disney comics be without Huey, Dewey, and Louie and Grandma Duck, also non-Barks creations?

The Gemstone comics have stopped for the moment due to unrelated problems at the company (with non-Disney product also affected), but while they lasted (2003-2008), about 25 Fethry stories were published. So while a reader of 1990s issues wouldn't know Fethry, a modern reader might be quite familiar with him.
