Are digital cameras and laptops harmed by airport screening?

Well, I have done my share of searching on google and have found conflicting info regarding the effects of airport screening devices on laptops and digital cameras - my family will be traveling on vacation next month via airline, and not having flown for a few years now, I dont want anything to get messed up by by the security checks at the airport. can anyone confirm one way or the other if this will damage our laptop, digital camera or the memory card?

Any tips would be most welcome! Thanks in advance!

I take both through airport security many times every year and nothing has ever happened. Film can get messed up, but I don't see how a digital medium could be affected. They don't have magnets in there. Happy trails!

No laptop but I've taken my digital camera(s) through security without problems to the camera or memory card. As Pressplay mentioned, regular film used to have issues. You would trust her, right?

Taken my laptop, digital cameras, hard drives, memory cards, high-end video cameras and tape stock through security checkpoints many many times and never had an issue.

I've taken cameras and laptops through many times without problems. Except the last time I flew my laptop achieved self-awareness and I had to kill it before it did the same to me.

I was told that removing the batteries/cells from any electronics might be good idea while going through the airport, but sometimes they want you to turn on your laptop, so you may wanna keep that battery with the laptop, just not installed.

Re: Are digital cameras and laptops harmed by airport screening?

Nope. At LAX and other major airports, the US TSA now requires you to actually take video cameras, laptops, and MP3 players out of your bag and place them in a seperate bin for scanning. New TSA approved laptop bags allow you to open it up clamshell style and allow the laptop section to be scanned without removal. You still need to take out the video camera and MP3 player though.

Now, new US TSA guidelines require checked baggage to be X-rayed so the new machines do not affect media that can be damaged by magnets. However, this does not extend to the carry on baggage checkpoints so keep any film in your checked luggage just to be safe.
