What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

I just recently had one friend who "upgraded", and another who "downgraded" do to different life circumstances. So begs the question....

Me?

1979 Toyota Tercel hatchback in 1998. Had no doorlocks (busted out), rusted floorboards, about 100HP, and smelled like cat urine.

2005 G35 coupe. Much better than above, but more prone to speeding tickets and nightmares of runaway shopping carts.

Worst: '82 Mustang that I bought used. I lost count of how often the starter failed.

Yeah, but boy can this thing run. Your kidney will probably fail but it does. I'm still driving my 1995 Tercel. It only smells like cat urine when it's raining. Can never figure out why.

Worst: '80 Mustang with huge electrical problems. Total piece of crap.

Best: '65 Buick Riviera. Not great mechanically, but it was cool. So cool that Patrick Swayze need on (but a '63) in Road House.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Best: 1994 Honda del Sol - not a single issue with it and it was a blast to drive.

Worst: 1986(?) Merkur xr4ti - total p.o.s. Went through 3 radiators in a matter of a couple years, and countless other problems. Spent probably 3x what it was worth fixing it.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst: '67 Mustang - very barebones, no A/C (in Arizona!) but had one great feature, a windshield wiper/washer operated with a foot pedal.

Best: '95 Corvette - very comfortable, still fun to drive.
Runner-up for Best: '67 XKE - very fun, cool car but a pain to restore and maintain.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst - '86 Aerostar minivan I bought in '94. Lasted one year and the engine was shot. That's what I get for financing a used car.

Best - for now I'd have to say my '01 Camry. Had it four years and over 70K miles with no problems. Currently in an '05 Highlander LTD which I love and drives great, but I don't want to jinx it by saying it's my best car.

Holy crap. My father has the same. And having watched him over the years try to restore minor things, it is a huge pain.

His is yellow

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

I'd like to say my worst was a 1964 Corvair Monza 4-door I had because it broke down all the time but it really was fun to have. So I'll say it's replacement was, a

1974 Olds Cutlas, just wasn't much fun

Best, my current 2004 Silverado, first car (truck) I ever got new.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst: 1980 Chevette. I inherited this one from my dad when I was in high school at a ritzy private school. It did not fit in with the BMWs and Porshes in the parking lot. No power steering, tons of mechanical problems and an interior that flaked off at the slightest touch. My friends wrote their initials on the back door panel with their fingers

Best: 2002 Subaru WRX. So much fun to drive.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst: 1984 Pontiac Fiero. I called the bank and made a voluntary repossesion because I had it one week over the limit for the California Lemon law.

Best: 1994 Mazda B2300 pickup. It's a cheap four cylindar POS but I have over 280,000 miles on it and have only replaced the clutch. No other issues with it.

Best: 2005 MINI Cooper S. Such an amazing car to drive.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst-'87 Ford Taurus-a rolling junkyard, when it was rolling.

Best-toss up between '77 Pinto wagon and '80 BMW 316. I put untold thousands of hard and fast miles on each with only regular maintenance required.

My Saturn was beloved for the 11 years I drove it, but it did require a surprising number of repairs (under warranty).

I've had my '04 Toyota Tundra for 9 months or so and it has been flawless thus far, even towing a huge overloaded cargo trailer from Florida to Alaska last summer, so it may very well become my "best" someday.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst:
1990 Pontiac TransSport (ha!) my parents gave me. This car was an unbelievable piece of crap. My parents (for some reason) bought Pontiacs when I was growing up, and this was another in a long line of completely awful cars. GM deserves exactly what they have coming.

Anyway, the TransSport:
1. Had zero power, I mean zeee-roooh. 1950's technology pushrod V6.
2. Looked like a dustbuster
3. Paint flaked off in sheets when it was 5 years old, plastic body panels subsequently rapidly degraded and became rough.
4. Aforementioned plastic body panels fit together as is a blind six year old had assembled the car. This was the era of the giant plastic body cladding for Pontiac, cladding that fell off after a few years.
5. You could pull chunks of the dashboard apart easily by hand, despite the exposed screwheads. Ac Delco radio was a gutless piece of crap, all switchgear was cheaper than cheap feeling.
6. The entire interior design seemed to purposefully waste interior space.
7. Everything broke at 80K miles. Water pump, oil pump etc. Even the damned ECM failed shortly thereafter. It eventually blew a head gasket at 140K and I just gave the damned thing away.

God, I hated that car.

Best car:
1999 V6 Honda Accord 2 door.
Rock solid, drove extremely well, bulletproof and well designed interior, turbine-smooth engine, comfy seats, great/simple dash design. Mainly it never, ever broke. IMO, this was the best version of the Accord, they proceeded t get uglier and more complicated, but not any better as cars.

Worst: '82 Jetta. Had a lot of crap break on it. Got to the point where I didn't want to drive on the freeway.

Best: '06 Accord. No problems with it so far.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst: 1982 Dodge Charger 2.2 (a souped-up Dodge Omni). The carburetor was so bad that it was impossible to maintain a constant speed because it would surge every four or five seconds. Dodge stopped selling carburetor rebuild kits by 1985 because they just didn't work. The carb was so complicated that only person who would work on it was a single mechanic at the dealer.

Chrysler had been hit by the double-whammy of bankruptcy and improved fuel economy regulations. They were unable to build a good car.

Best: 1985 VW Rabbit. Reliable as hell, cornered like a sports car, and just fun to drive. A little old lady ran a red light and totaled it.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst: 1975 Gremlin ... bought used in 1984 or so and lasted a month.

Best: 2007 Toyota 4Runner Limited. I test drove the equivalent Lexus several times and couldn't justify the extra $10K...at all. Same smooth V8, nice interior, quiet ride.

My worst was a Chevy Spectrum can't remember the year I had it my last year of HS (92) and it was awful. All my friends called it the rectum.

My best is my Saab 9-3 2003. I haven't had it too long but man it just has the euro feel of comfort and style and its a great driver.

I have only owned one car 2005 BMW X5. So it is the worst car I've ever owned... it's also the best.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

best: 1991 Toyota Camry, drove it 100K miles and it never needed anything but regular maintenance

worst: 1996 Dodge Neon. It wasn't mine, it was my husband's but it was so terrible it could bring down several other unrelated people. We sold both of these cars 6 weeks apart, and the 91 Camry with 100K miles on it was worth more money than the 96 Neon with 47K miles (because the Neon wasn't even running when we finally unloaded it).

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst: The 1980 Mercury Zephyr my parents handed down to me in 1992 when I got my license. Little to no power and the engine would kill everytime you came to a stop with the A/C running. It also hated to be shut down and then restarted with less than 10 minutes between.

Best: The three Acura's I have owned. I bought a 90 Integra GS with 70k miles in 96and drove it to 140k miles over 3 years. Replaced with a new 98 Integra GS-R that I drove to 100k miles, and currently have a 06 TSX that I bought off e-bay in 1997 with 12k miles on it. With a cumilative total of almost 200k miles between the three, I have only been stranded once, when the alternater on the 1990 failed. It cost $80 to fix and that is the only non-maintenance repair I have put into any of them. Oil changes, tire rotations and the occasional valve adjustment is all I have put into them.

I desperately want to find the balls to take a chance on a BMW one of these days, but hate the idea of buying a more expensive car that will end up costing me even more in maintenance and repairs. My wrong wheel drive, re-labled Hondas offer 90% of the fun, 110% of the luxury at 75% of the cost a BMW commands.

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

Worst is a toss up between my non hatchback lemon ( LOL ) yellow Chevrolet Citation . My grandparents bought it for me used and the fan belt broke on it within two days.. it was down hill from there. My Dodge neon. the last four years that I owned that car I was having to replace brakes AND tires every year. Not to mention the fact that the ac never worked right and merging on the highway was a nightmare due to lack of acceleration .

Best is my current car, my 2000 mustang. I have not had any problems with it at all. now I say this and it's probably going to break down but I love this car!!

Re: What's the worst/best car you've ever owned?

worst: 95 Ford Taurus. It was a horrible car to drive and had lots of problems. only got it because of the price, less than half of the new cost, for a less than 3 year old car, at the time, but man, there's a reason it's that way.
96 Ford Escort. probably just as bad as the Taurus. blew a valve (in the engine) at about 40k. lots of other problems.

best: 2007 GTI. this is a fun car to drive, great for daily driving but also fun on weekends and on canyons and the such. even though VW is known for problems, in the nearly 3 years i've owned it, i've only taken it to the dealer once, and only to have an optional program (launch control) installed.

Lesson learned. never buy a Ford. Even though VWs are statistically unreliable, at least they're refined and fun to drive.
