Would you worry about buying a GM? (Chevy)

My plan was to buy a new car next year, but I think I can swing it this year. I figure I probably have a better deal this year than next. I'd like to get a Chevy Malibu, but I'm somewhat worried about what might happen if they do go under as far as warranties, recalls, parts for repairs, etc.

I know Obama gave his buy a car pitch and said the government would back the warranties, but that's not very reassuring.

I think I'd be okay with a GM. It's an awfully big company and unlikely to just vanish like Yugo. I'd be more worried about Chrysler products. I don't know if they'll be making Jeep parts in a few years.

Warranties are overrated...just buy a used car you can work on yourself or get serviced anywhere (any GM model). If you want a Malibu...

Re: Would you worry about buying a GM? (Chevy)

They'll keep making the parts for a couple decades even if the companies go out of business. There are millions of GM/Chrysler cars on the road, and just about all of the parts are shared among several makes and models. They still make aftermarket parts for niche cars that went out of production 50 years ago, so there is no way the aftermarket manufacturers will stop making parts for current cars. They already have all the tooling and production capability, so there would be no reason to stop making them for the millions of cars on the road.

The bigger question is whether you want to wait until they declare bankruptcy to get a better deal. I imagine they would have to provide some huge incentives to get people to buy cars from a bankrupt company, so waiting may be to your benefit.

I don't want to buy a new car just for a warranty. The car I have now is fine, just want a new one.

If you're intent on getting a new car, then yeah, I'd worry about a GM warranty. It may be backed by the US govt, but who knows what kind of red tape you'll have to go through to get some service. Think of the "customer service" you get from the USPS.

You are paying cash right? You should just buy a Toyota, then you will never have to worry about repairs!

Honestly though, I wouldn't worry about buying a GM any more than I did 6 or 12 months ago.

Yes, it's going to be a Malibu or keep the car I got. I really like the Malibu's. I'm a Chevy loyalist. Someone mentioned the Camaro's; I liked them at first, but the more I look at the pictures - the less I like it. It's not really my style either. Plus the price is higher.

The plan is to pay cash, but I'll only do it if I get the deal I want and also get what I'm looking for on my current car. I don't need a new car, my car should have a few good years left (10 yrs old, 70,000 miles).

I just said it's a Malibu or nothing. I also wasn't asking which kind of car to buy, just about whether I should be worried about GM's future if I do buy a Malibu.

Re: Would you worry about buying a GM? (Chevy)

Interesting topic. My wife just rode in a Suburban and was talking about how much she liked it. So I gave serious thought to whether I would buy one given what is going on. Remember the Simpsons episode where they make alcohol illegal, and the Duff Brewery talks about how they will survive, be better than ever, and as the CEO walks through the gates, they slam and an "OUT OF BUSINESS" sign is thrown on the gate? That is what worries me. I've held stock in companies that have done the same thing. I have seen companies go through mergers, etc. that have done the same thing. They lie to your face when things are bad to try to keep things alive. They look for the largest thing around that is penis shaped, to force up your rectum so they can break it off. Plain and simple, I have felt stupid for believing companies in the past based on what they say rather than looking at the strength of the company. I don't have faith in their strength. I think they are destined to fail the moment the government decides they can't be saved, and I won't go down with another company.

Re: Would you worry about buying a GM? (Chevy)

I don't like the Malibu, but if you really really like it then buy it.

Parts will be available for GMs for a long time even if they go bankrupt. The only question is whether or not the warranty will be any good.

What???? Jeep is Chrysler's most valuable product. People who buy Jeeps tend to be the most loyal in repurchase among the auto industry. If Chrysler goes under, there will be plenty of buyers for the Jeep brand.
