How do you put a bike rack on a car with a spare on the back?

I'm looking at getting a Jeep Liberty. I need one with a square hitch so I can put a bike rack on. They sell tons of squate hitches online but won't the spare on the back get in the way of the bike rack?

To avoid interference from that often-intrusive, rear-mounted spare tire, this bar extends Softride bike racks an extra 4" to 8" from vehicles to allow clearance. Designed for 2" Dura and Versa racks, it replaces the existing hitch bar.

I guess you could always take the spare tire off and put it in the vehicle and use your old bike rack.

If you have a rack store, go there, they'll know.

Also, how expensive are your bikes? What kind of bikes? I have heard from many many mt bikers that the Thule T2 is the way to go, but these are all mt bikers with very expensive bikes (that often have odd geometry).

My Yakima Trailer hitch Bike rack fits perfectly fine on my FJ Cruiser even with the spare. It has a pin release so one can open the rear door or access the spare without taking it off.

There's a link on Yakima's site that lets you check for the best fit based on your vehicle.

Not an FJ but it give you an idea that it can be done on Jeeps too.
