What year did messageboards really take off and become popular? I didn't start looking on the web until the fall of 2000.

That's how I found out about DVD Talk. I was at HTF before, and I read a lot of posts from uppity folks complaining about those "people over at DVD Talk." I had to see for myself and I liked the vibe here so much better.

Let's see how long I've been here.

Hmm- more than a year after I got my first DVD player. Don't think I even had a real computer then.

Some of the names in this thread are more familiar to me than many members of my family.

Considering how I feel about many in my family, you can all take that as a compliment

'99, the year when internet coupons were worth something.

That's pretty much how it went for me, although I continued to visit HTF for discussion about hardware as their forum remained better than here for that. That is, until I found AVSforum and left the (then) very poorly-run HTF for good.

Yep. i was apparently so busy using that multi-use Reel.com {insert moment of silence here} coupon that i didn't join up until January, 2000. That's my excuse and i'm sticking to it....

.07 posts/day doesn't beat you but is close

Usually when I get a chance to look at the board any topic I am interested in already has anything I would add to it.

People who claim they "lurked for a while first" and didn't have the balls to join in '99 are simply NOT part of the 1999 club. Suck it!

99er's unite. I'm averaging 0.11 posts. I may not post a whole bunch but I've been checking "other" three times a day for years. So I know everything about all you guys and your dating issues.

I also posted the below quote in a thread where we were talking about Amazon and how many DVDs they sell. Maybe a fellow '99 member can jog my memory . . .

What was that store that wasn't around long that was begun by a movie exec (maybe from Disney?) and they offered customers a code who had a previous service issue to order DVDs at 50 or 60% off and already discounted price? The code ended up getting out and circulating the net and the store honored everything. That's how I ended up finding DVDTalk. I got a nice order in from that place. Think it was out of business in 6 months. This was around June of 1999.

Technically, I was a May 99'er under the name "Reverenddave". But in 2001 I screwed up, forgot my password, created a new ID and my original one got "banned".

But I was here lurking when the site opened up in early '99 (I think it was February or March).
