Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

Today Robin Quivers finally revealed why she has been out of the studio for over a year. She has done the show via ISDN line since May 2012 when she had a "grapefuit sized" tumor removed (which she announced at the time).

Well, today she finally revealed that she had cancer is now cured. Of course she has a book coming out soon that she needs to promote also...

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

I was so excited to listen to today's show and hear George back in the studio. It's been too long since he was last in.

Was nice to hear Robin finally talk about her cancer. That was a riveting hour. Hope she is doing okay, but I can't help but feel like there is more to the story, since so very few people are suddenly "cured" of their cancer.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

I didn't get to listen to it. I really wanted to though. Did anyone bring up her hypocrisy regarding the medical establishment? In the past she has claimed doctors don't always want to heal you and that western medicine isn't always helpful. My guess is once she found the tumor, she ran to a doctor az quickly as she could, throwing her "values" right out the Window.

^She credited her veganism as helping her survive the ordeal. Her doctors told her that your survival rate is much higher, depending on how healthy you are going INTO a cancer struggle.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

I thought it was common knowledge that Robin wasn't in the studio? I don't really listen anymore but I did back a little after she made the tumor announcement and she wasn't in the studio and they weren't trying to pretend that she was.

I'm sure that is the case, but that's not really my point. My point is, she has consistently railed against the western medical system, saying that they don't know everything and aren't the only way to do things. Then she gets cancer, and probably ran to the best cancer specialist who practices western medicine. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad she beat the cancer and I wish her well, but she's so hypocritical and it's obnoxious as hell.

It was common knowledge, but they never really talked about the reason why she wasn't there.

Indeed. I think all they ever said was that she had some kind of bladder problem. And while it was sometimes obvious that she was not in the studio there were other times where it seemed like she was absolutely there. So I am suprised to hear that she was out this entire time.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

I have only gotten into Stern in the last 5 years. Coming from the UK we have little history with the guy really. Over the years of listening to him and watching the show i have come to some conclusions. The first is that his show has deteriorated in time dramatically. Every time i hear his show in recent times he has talked about contract issues, Americas Got Talent or seemingly always complaining about how the phone systems are not working properly. He really seems to moan a great deal.

Secondly, i find most of the crew to be incredibly irritating. And that goes for a lot of the whack pack. My favorite shows have been the old ones with Hank, Beetle, the Jesus Twins...etc. The older shows had really funny whack packers. These days they all seem to just be wanting to come in and do something strange just to get their 5 mins of fame. High Pitch Eric is a prime example of one of these annoying packers. In the studio people like JD are so obnoxious. They all creep onto Howard and they bring nothing at all to the table. Then we have Robin and George. I find that they also bring nothing to the show...especially Robin who is just plain annoying. It shows how long it has been since i listened to a new episode as i did not even realize that she was out of the studio. I guess the only ones i have heard over the last 12 months had George standing in.

Lastly, it just seems that the edge has been taken off this show. For me the most interesting parts of the show have always been the interviews. The rest of the show is just fluff and a waste of time. The only time i listen anymore is if i find out someone like Norm Macdonald is coming in. He always brings the laughs. Even someone like Jim Breuer who i love seems to be wearing thin on the show.

I am trying more and more to find ways to listen to the show from 10+ years ago. They seem to be the real gold.

Go back even further than that time frame. Stern was a comedic genius in the 80s and 90s. He also had a better cast of characters around him.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

Different people like different eras. I enjoy the 2004-2010, covering the final few years on terrestial radio and their first five at Sirius.

The interviews are usually excellent, but my favorite part of the show was the "fluff". I liked all the behind the scenes soap opera going on with Artie and guys on the crew. It was great when something random would come up and they were free to spend an hour on it.

What I miss the most is Sal. When he first started and was desperate for air time I loved when he would come charging into the studio just to say or do something stupid. By the time of this new contract, Sal seems to have disappeared. I loved him and Richard as in-studio characters. Most likely their schtick was just as fake as those horrible "phoney" phone calls, but I really enjoyed it.

Classic interview with Colt 40 Feinberg & Chris Rock. Man I miss that dude (C40F)!

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

I started listening to Howard about 4 years ago (after a 15 year hiatus) and have loved his show... but yeah, it's mostly AGT and his contract issues now. He's still great but I mostly like when he rails on JD, Ronnie, Benjy and Debbie the Pet Lady (where has she been??). Enough of the repeat guests too --- I don't give a shit about Jenny McCarthy and she's certainly not compelling enough to book every 3 months (or less).

Howard has always used his contract as fodder for the show. I remember when he first came on the air in Boston in '94 or so, listening to him complaining about how he was sick of his contract and he wouldn't re-sign at the end of it.

He still gives the best celebrity interviews out of anyone, IMO. Howard is a master at digging for interesting bits about the celebrity's life that you won't hear anywhere else.

My biggest beef about the show is it is almost never on. They will take off weeks on end, and then give you maybe 3 shows a week if you're lucky. They've are now running reruns of reruns to fill the time slot. So sick of hearing the Saved by the Bell cast interviews.

Well its tough to find any that far back. On the bright side, there seems to be a number of people that are posting some of his stuff to Youtube, so that really helps. Can't think of anywhere else that i can find his stuff without going straight to Sirius. I have watched a few classics recently though like the interview with Jan Michael Vincent, the whole Bon Jovi and Kinison saga, the Chevy Chase fight. All good stuff.

Maybe its because I got older with Howard, but I think I prefer his newer version than the Butt Bongo Howard.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

IMO they should never have any guests, period.

The show took a hit when Artie "left", but he left them little choice. The problem was, he kept Howard from getting too "homo", for lack of a better word. All the AGT talk is a bore. And swear to Jebus, no more Joan Rivers, Lisa Lampinelli, Tan Mom, the aforementioned Jenny McCarthy, Kathy Griffin, or Sybian rides.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

Interviews are still great if it's someone interesting. George is always fun and is a calm presence. Fred's impressions when he chimes in really miss the mark. I miss Artie too. I usually fall asleep to the show at night, not in a bad way but I like listening to it as I sleep. Later on I actually listen to the parts I miss.

I like hearing Richard's stories, I don't listen to the calls as much but his life on the farm, or his obsession with Halloween is fun to hear about. That should be rekindled soon.

One of the longer sagas I keep going back to is the situation where Howard and Beth left Gary's fancy dinner party early. It was a small but elaborate gathering that included Ronnie, Artie and Tom Chiusano among others. Live orchestra playing music, and a professional chef preparing the meal. So it's a multiple day long thread of everybody (for once) ganging up on Howard for leaving early. They dedicate the wrap up show to it as well, and talk to Gary's wife and Ralph chimes in of course. It's great.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

I think you love the show you started listening to. For me that was the Jackie years. The show has never been the same since he left, the chemistry has never been the same. Howard hasn't had the same energy or found a rival like Jackie was. With Artie the show was good just different but it was clearly going down hill IMO. Without Artie I simply can't even listen to the show.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

Jackie's incessant guffawing whenever Howard read one of his jokes was nails on a chalkboard to me. To me the best years ever were the early satellite era (2006-2008'ish). The ascension of Eric the Midget, Steve Langford's huge penis, Sal's apology, the live nighttime Artie roast, totally uncensored everything, etc.

Those were the glory days for me, plus the at that time, I was living in a tiny hotel room in Saskatchewan in the middle of winter, working nights, no computer, with literally nothing to do after work but sit up and listen to those shows. I'd laugh till I was crying.

George's first brilliant week.
The Revelation Game
Ronnie debut's "Let's fuck some whores"
JD reveals his on-line persona Da Bad Ass

Only thing I didn't care for was the never ending sybian rides. Thankfully, I can't remember the last time they did one.

Re: What's new on the Howard Stern Show?

When Richard and Howard pranked Sal into thinking that not only were they (Richard and Howard) hanging out often, that they were the best of friends, living it up together in the Hamptons, had sold a pilot to ABC and were doing 13 episodes of a new comedy series, but that Richard was in fact DATING BETH'S COUSIN... and Sal bought it... I almost pooped myself raw.

Oh, and Riley Martin... my GOD that's comedy gold.

Yes! The whole "Psycho Sal" drama when he first started working there, asking to spend the night at Howard's was hysterical. Second only to when Sal started talking about the "The Booths". Or Sal's teenage rap "career". Anything Sal was golden.

I miss him more than Artie

I love the interviews when it is someone interesting. I agree with the Joan Rivers and Lisa Lampanelli garbage. Bryan Cranston was good. The dude that founded Twitter was good. Rachel Maddow was good. People that have some current relevance and have never REALLY been interviewed before.
