These reserved parking spaces are getting out of hand

It's one thing we have to have handicapped/disabled parking spaces. I understand that...state law and all. But lately I've been seeing arbitrary reserved parking spaces pop up. Two I've seen myself recently: "Reserved for Expecting Mothers." OMG, how did women in the past ever manage to give birth to kids that were alive when they had to walk *gasp* ACROSS A PARKING LOT??? And the one that topped it off the other day...I went to a mall and saw "Reserved for Families With Small Children Or Strollers." ARE YOU SERIOUS???

How are these things even allowed? Could I open a store and just create my own arbitrary reserved parking space signs? "Reserved for People With Blue Eyes and Blonde Hair?" "Reserved for Fat People?" "Reserved for the Wealthy Top 2%?" It would have no end.

All these spaces serve to do is push back where normal people can park even further into the lot.

Screw it. I parked in the stroller space. I had enough! It's time for some civil disobedience with these things. It's ridiculous and shouldn't be allowed. It's not like state law is mandating those spaces.

"Reserved for Expecting Mothers"

I need a ruling here.

Expecting means..? That you are due within the next couple of months? 9 months? That you expect one day you will probably have another child? That you expect good prices at the store?

And it would seem that only current mothers qualify. Otherwise you are just "expecting" because you are not a mother. So only current mothers who are expecting something can park there I guess. What if I am expecting my mother to show up? Should I not be allowed to park in the "Reserved for Expecting Mothers" slot?

If you own or rent the parking lot, of course you could and should have that right.

For those of you asking, "Why exactly would I want to reverse text???", please read below:

• At some point in your life, you may find that you have too much time on your hands. 9 out of 10 leading experts agree that reversing text is a proven way to waste time.

• Your name, when spelled in reverse, may be something funny or cool (e.g. liam reversed spells mail). Avoid the surprise of getting embarrassed at some point in the future by finding out now.

• Confuse your boss by sending him an email about the project you are working on completely in reverse. When he calls and asks what the problem with your email is, tell him that he must be having computer problems.

• Try to find a word, or combination of words, that when reversed spell something funny or strange (e.g., 'knits i', 'god a ward', 'bats', 'desserts', 'and' or 'live'). If you find another one, send it to us and we'll post it here.

• Try to find words that are exactly the same when reversed. For example, 'racecar' when reversed is also 'racecar'. The same is true with the phrases 'able was i ere i saw elba', 'a man a plan a canal panama', 'may a moody baby doom a yam', 'never odd or even' or 'rats live on no evil star' and names like 'Bob', 'Anna' and 'Hannah'. If you find others, send them to us and we'll post them here.

• Save time by taking Hebrew text that was keyed right-to-left and convert it to a right-to-left format.

• You'll have to reverse this one to decipher it.... resrever txet siht htiw deifsitas %001 t'nera uoy fi eetnaraug kcab yenom a reffo eW

Ah, but is it enforceable? That is the question. The mall may have the right to put up 50 reserved signs if they see fit to, but is it enforceable?

They are not enforceable so you can park in them if you want to.

Who's going to go up to a woman and ask her how far along she is?

I would think so. Otherwise, I'm parking in the valet-only parking next time.

(Which brings up another tangent of this topic: If you do drive a car with a disabled tag, and you yourself are not disabled but are driving the car because you borrowed it, does that give you a right to park in a reserved space? I am sure the law would permit it, but should you?)

It's like all the drugs advertised on TV. "Not to be taken by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant." Um...last I checked EVERY woman has the ability/possibility of becoming pregnant.

I guess it depends what you mean by enforceable... don't they have a right to tow your car if it's on their property? I'm pretty sure they won't ask for a blood test from women, but if you're a man (and have always been a man, so we disregard that one guy who gave birth) and park in an "expectant mothers" space, they seem to have a pretty good case.

This is similar to when I asked someone at a Christmas story in Michigan what a "family restroom" was. To which I got the answer, "it is for families, with small children". And then I thought to myself, if that was done in New Jersey, there would be a lawsuit for having men and women in the same bathroom, who weren't there to have sex.

As for the expecting mothers, total BS. What did they do before this? What's next a spot for "the guy who can walk but it too lazy to park far away and will complain about it for any hour" spot?

Sure - if they say 'violators subject to tow' and have a tow truck company contracted.

I like the Reserved For In-Store Pickup customers at Best Buy. Probably a gesture to save time getting to your car after you've waited 20 f'in minutes to simply pick up a CD.

They haven't gotten the convenience portion of that quite nailed down yet.

P.S. Regarding the OP, I really don't have a problem with those spaces, except I'm afraid it takes us down a road we don't want to travel: that of equating pregnancy with disability. Yikes.

I guess I'll say it again, those are not enforceable. Unless there is a state statute number on them you can park there if you want. They are considered courtsey spots. You can't get a ticket from the guy collecting carts for parking there, but you probably gets stares and people calling you a dick. For some of you probably not a new occurance.

Below is an interesting article about how California is thinking of letting pregnant women park in handicap spots.
