In what kind of job's do you just wait?

I was just watching a movie and there were a few people who just wait around and do whatever until a light goes off or they are called, they push a few buttons and get back to reading, surfing the internet or just waiting.

What kind of jobs, both overnight and daytime, do you do that? Just sit around until your needed and then go back to waiting?

I have a job like that for the most part. I handle the scheduling for a customer contact center. Ideally we should be idle most of the time so that when a scheduling request comes in we can handle it as quickly as possible.

If you get high enough on the IT side, you can just relax.

My job (Satellite Communications Tech) can be like that at times...but you have to know what to do when the alarms start going off and that takes a lot of experience. Other times have projects to work on etc, so not always like that.

I knew someone who was an E-15, a Chief Master Sargent. He was the senior NCO on the airbase. His job was to handle things that could be counted. Payroll, supplies, bullets, and nukes were all his responsibility.

Apparently, all he did was play computer games. But his subordinates had great respect for him, because if they ever had a problem, he knew the answer off the top of his head.
