Hair loss - where would you go?

There are a lot of commercials on lately for hair loss treatments for both men and women. How are you supposed to know who to go see when this happens?

Do you go to a regular general doctor, a dermatologist or a hair loss clinic?

I remember when I was in high school I always thought it was strange that my friends mom had REALLY thinning hair in the front. I thought to myself "I wonder if she knows that she's going bald".

At any rate, where do you go for this? What do you do? I realize men just probably let it go because they think that's what's supposed to happen as they get older. But if you are a man who doesn't want to just give up - what have you done or are you currently doing? Same for women. I KNOW there's no women who'd just give up!

Didn't Ron Popeil invent hair in a can? And wasn't it like banned or something?

Yes and no, respectively.

Ronco (Ron Popeil's company) sells GLH Formula #9. It is still available for sale, from ronco.com.

LOL I remember those commercials for spray on hair! It would shoot out like those little wormy fireworks things. Instant hair!

Being male, it doesn't bother me. If I were a woman, I'd first try Rogaine since it is available over the counter.

As someone with a full, luxurious mane of hair which won't be going anywhere, I'm not sure I can even fathom your question.

No, seriously. Half of the time spent on cutting my hair is spent on thinning it out.

I am already losing my hair. Not going to do anything about it. I look on the bright side. Bar of soap $.99 shampoo $5 a bottle.

Where would I go? I'd go to the nearest Target, buy a good razor, and shave the rest off. Shaving my head is the best "hair decision" I've ever made. Love it!

I'd hate you...if it weren't for that glorious head of hair.

Coming from a family with common baldness among the men, I am happy to say I made it to the 30's with a full head of hair.

If it were to start rolling back, I would have no problem shaving it all.

I would start with my GP or GYN. And get blood work. Have your thyroid tested. And maybe have my hormones checked. And whatever else causes women to lose hair... then go from there.

There was a blog post I found one day and I think the name of the site was Bald Tony. For some reason I didn't save a link to his site, and I can't find it now, but he had gone through a LOT of the options available to men. He concluded that there were two you would need that are most effective, if used together:
Provillus

And

Nizoral Shampoo

I wish I could say I have tried both. Paying my bills takes a bit more precedent to me in today's economy than making sure my hair isn't getting thinner (which it sadly is.) But the blog post I found this information at was just a regular guy posting his findings, not a website selling anything.

2nd to last. That's hot.

My (real) dad has this extremely thick, full head of hair and not one single gray hair. I already have grays at 34 and have had a few for years. GRR!

If you say so... I'm a forehead guy, so I'm more into the frontal female baldness.

I'm only 32 and have had grays slowly multiplying for at least 5 years. The wifey thinks it looks "distinguished," so whatever...

I wasted no time going to a dermatologist when I noticed my hair starting to thin several years ago. Call me vain or whatever but I am not about to embrace losing my hair. I got a prescription for Propecia and haven't had any more thinning since.

I think some of them are kinda cute - but they're not just along my temple anymore, they're in totally random places. My husband just laughs and says I'm old. Fucker.

That's what I was wondering. Why a dermatologist? How do you choose where to go?
