NEED HELP: Offered Job in Waldorf, MD is it worth it?

Ok, alittle background before I get into it.

I've been working for a fortune 500 company for the past 8 years. I've been transfered to three different markets to help out with problem area's (shrink - sales - marketing)

Now I'm currently in Charleston, WV and have been offered a store in Waldorf, MD. I was wanting to know a couple things from people in and around the Maryland area...

How's the crime rate?

Is there alot of racial issues?

How are leasing/rental prices on Apartments?

I was also wondering if there are other things that I havent factored into the equation that i should concern myself with.

I currently pay $670 month for rent.

From my understanding Washington is like 18 miles from Waldorf and its a big commute city.

I have a confrence call with the District Manager at 12:30pm today and was wanting to see what others thought of this and surrounding areas. They have called me twice now trying to see how I felt about the store. I've told them I'm going to need some time to discuss it with my fiancee and if this would be a good opportunity for our family.

As I get off to work I will be checking this from my iPhone for some replies...

Thank you in advance.

I second that. Go to the Forums and ask there, they have them set up for every state and various citites. Ask people first hand from those that live there.

I would say yes, just based on the fact that you're in West Virginia now.

18 miles outside of DC = $$$

I don't know the Waldorf area, but I know the northwest and southwest cost of living around DC is $$$. Charlston, WV is a very inexpensive place to live (one of my best friends lived there), and unless you get a significant bump in pay..I wouldn't even consider it.

I did a quick search for Cost of Living:

National Average: 100
Charleston, WV: 81
Waldorf, MD: 137

So 50-something % more expensive. Another place estimated about a 44% difference in cost of living. Sadly, that isn't nearly as bad as DC.

www.bankrate.com and a couple of the real estate places have more data for you.

This is true. The median home prices in Charles Co. are 50% above the national average, which is itself almost double that of the prices where the OP is from. That said, it's one of the least expensive parts of the region.

I agree with pedagogue that if you don't get a raise or at least a sizeable cost-of-living adjustment. Salary.com says that "the cost of living in Washington, DC is 86.2% higher than in Charleston, WV."

That's a big jump.

I would say that 50% is probably the bare minimum. That would be a pay cut and the move would be done for better career opportunities. Charleston's unemployment is below the national average but Charles Co.'s is even lower: only 3.3%.

I have an ex (girlfriend, not wife) that lives in Waldorf. She's hot, open-minded and currently single - so I say "yes".

Agreed.

You should also factor in all of the relocation costs, etc....because that can easily be another $10-$15k, conservatively. Frankly I wouldn't want to live anywhere near DC, traffic can suck and the cost/taxes are inflated. I almost took a job down there for ~$100k (back in 2003), and after figuring out the cost diff between there and B'more I'd be making the same amount, AND have to pay more for everything.

Like everyone else - w/o a large bump in pay, it won't be worth it based on COL. I imagine that living in Waldorf is cheaper than DC/NOVA, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in Waldorf. Then again, coming from WV......

Hey you might see Good Charlotte walking around their old stomping grounds!

There's also Hot Licks guitar store and a Subway!!

Outside of that, Waldorf sucks. If you want a taste of Waldorf, just order the salad.

no what I meant is there problems with discrimination going in either direction, black on white, white on black, etc.

I live in downtown charleston area and there is alot people that are afraid of certain elements in the community, impoverish or drug influenced, etc. There is alot of these cities around - but please dont put words into my mouth..

So basically, because you live in a racist city/area you expect other areas to be like that? Nice.

Maryland has some pockets with racial tension (for example, the area around Rising Sun, MD). Most of the mid-Atlantic, on the whole, is not really an issue.

Also, other wonderful things we have:
- Running water
- 9th to 12th grade educations

My parents lived in Waldorf from 1999-2003 while my father was stationed at Coast Guard HQ in DC. The drive to DC was like 45 minutes to an hour. I spent a summer working at the theater near St. Charles Towne Center and it was a rat infested hell hole. There's not much to do in Waldorf itself. It's kind of spread out and composed entirely of strip malls along Crain Highway. However, you can get awesome pizza called Napoli Pizzeria. Great pie! About the best thing I can say about the town is that it isn't in the middle of nowhere. If it was, I'd probably go insane.

Waldorf is a decent area. Quite a bit of construction going on down there. If you're commuting to DC then good luck with that but if you're working out there then no it wouldn't be terrible. I'm not sure about racial tension but it does look like a decent place to live, there or Accoceek.
