300-pound inmate complains Ark. jail doesn't feed him well

Sun Apr 27, 5:53 PM ET

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.

Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."

But Laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.

"If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight," the suit says. "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."

The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. The jail has served only cold food for years.

The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail Capt. Hunter Petray told The Morning News of northwest Arkansas for a story Saturday.

A typical Western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.

Laswell's suit was filed without a lawyer in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville.
I can't see how the hell this guy thinks he can win. He's massively obese, and wants to stay that way. I say fuck him, feed him the minimum you can by law, and he can fucking suffer. This guy is not just some non-violent drug offender, he's a fucking murderer/arsonist. He does not deserve the amount of food that it would take to maintain his weight. He should be thanking them that they helped him drop 100 lbs. Best fucking diet ever. The nerve of some people. This guy could die, and I know not feel bad for him, he does not deserve any sympathy.

No, the reason you lost weight is that you do not have access to your regular daily diet of 4 large pizzas.

I eat about 1900 calories a day, apparently I'm "starving to death".

Why is it so easy for prison inmates to file lawsuits?

Of course, behind every dumbass who tries to make a cash-grab, there is a POS lawyer who actually proceeds with the action.

i'm guessing he gets a lot more than 3000 calories outside. lowering the caloric intake to 3000 is probably the main reason why he lost so much weight.

if they feed them more then they're gonna get law suits saying they make the inmates fat.

Well, it looks like if they ever need to cast a live action South Park movie they have found the perfect Eric Cartman.
The thing I dont understand is how this guy doesnt want to lose some weight. The one good thing about prison is you are supposed to want to like get your body in shape right?

Yeah, I don't think anyone with that much neck fat should have too many worries about starving to death. Apparently he doesn't realize that it'll all balance out eventually. I'm sure 3,000 calories per day will be enough to stabilize his weight around 240 pounds. Then he'll be merely really fat instead of extremely fucking obese.

He should be ecstatic for the free weight loss program! Now he doesn't have to go to Jenny Craig.

If this case goes to court it should be pretty easy for the corrections dept to show that it is providing a necessary amount of calories and nutrition in the meals being provided.

That would be my thought also, if, for some crazy reason I was in jail, all I would do is lift. That way I could defend myself from midnight rapings.
