Depends on how good of friends you are, and how their breakup went. If you and him are good friends, I would suggest never. Too many other fish in the sea...

Wow tough one. I would say it depends on how close a friend it is, or if their friendship really matters to you or not.

btw, this isn't about me.

A friend of mine dated a girl for 5 months or so. Then they broke up but kept talking and going on dates and stuff for a few more months. A friend of ours started dating her recently. We aren't good friends with this guy but we all roll in the same circle. The question is if he broke the guy code or not.

Is 5 months a long time to be dating by today's standards?

I agree with cpgator. If things get serious, the ex is bound to see them together and that might stir some feelings and could cause friction.

Not that it can't work out, why risk a good friendship over it?

I'd never be able to do that to a friend.

If this dude just hangs out in your clique I don't think he's really breaking any rules. From what you've said it sounds like he's more of an acquantance anyway.

that's the only sticking point i guess.

the only reason the ex and the guy even know each other is because my friend brought her to his birthday party.

I agree there is no set answer. I think it all depends on the friend and his relationship with the ex. I would definitely have run it by the ex first because it all depends on if the guy is truly over her or if there is still something lingering. Because if he isn't over her then it will be rough. If he is over her and they are still friends, I say go for it.

Then again this comes from someone who dated the girl my best friend at the time had an affair with and she was best friends with his wife. In the end it didn't work out because I always felt like she settled for me since she couldn't have him and at the same time always wondered if they were still screwing around whenever they hung out.

Since this guy does not sound like he is a good friend of anyone involved, then he might be in the clear. If it's a good friend, the answer would be never, unless the ex gave the green light.

you usually don't date a friend's ex. that's kind of the point of being friends (according to me). it's like dating a friend's sister, which is ok, but it can easily affect the friendship relationship (which is probably valued more).

This is the correct answer. However, if you're just looking to her, I'd say 6 weeks to 2 months is a good waiting period.

Good friends? Never.
OK friends? Whenever the ex gives the ok.
