Give me your Mint Julep recipes

We're flying a group out to the Kentucky Derby, next week. I thought it would be fun to make mint juleps for them on the flight up, considering it's the drink du jour for the Derby.

I know the basic ingredients: bourbon whiskey, simple syrup, mint, and ice. But what proportions do you use? What special techniques? What bourbon??

My plan: Make the syrup ahead of time, have it ready in a squeeze bottle. We always have ice on the plane. All I need is the bourbon and mint, and appropriate measuring devices.

So, have at it!

I've heard the best Mint Julep is where you mix the syrup, mint, and ice then throw that part away and drink the bourbon straight. Nothing else to add, just something I heard when searching for a recipe myself.

Plus it is a local bourbon, and I guess it is decent (i don't know, but the people i was with seemed to like it)

Woodford is good.

I actually think Mint Juleps are sort of disgusting (although I love dark liquor). Maybe I haven't had the right one.

The one bartender near me makes an awesome gin smash, which is basically a Mint Julep but they use Hendrick's gin.

And mojitos are great, although hard to make right.

Ditto. Like the Mojito, smash a good amount of Mint and simple syrup together (Muddle).... pack glass full of ice, fill the rest with some good old Makers Mark. That is how I have had mine.

I've only ever had two. Maybe they just weren't made right.
