Vacationing in Belize?

Any Otters have been on a vacation in Belize? Looking for personal opinions on where to stay, what to do, tips and hints, etc.

I looked into it, but chose to go to Costa Rica instead.

I could be totally off, but I got the impression that you would be staying on a beachside bungalo, in a small town with excellent scuba/diving opportunities, a nice beach, and maybe a couple tours to the temples. Not much else.

I am looking to do this bike race possibly in the next year or two:

Thats the impression that I get, and kind of what I was looking for (quiet beaches, diving, trips to the jungle, mayan temples/ruins)

That bike race looks fun.

Why did you choose Costa Rica?

I spent a day there last year. Loved it. The country is poor. The people are great. It's the only country south of the U.S. border where English is the official language.

We went cave-tubing and zip-lining. It was several levels of awesome. I could have spent a whole day cave-tubing. We went w/ a adventure-tour company owned by a Belizean and our tour-guide was of Mayan ancestry, iirc. I'd highly recommend them.

I believe they also have a gigantic jaguar preserve in the south that is a must-see, too.

I would definitely head back there in the future to spend a week w/ family and friends.

I would have loved the diving, but the gf wouldn't have. Beaches would have been cool, but weren't a priority. I guess it was just that CR was somewhere we both had wanted to go, and Belize popped up more recently. Also wanted an all inclusive resort and a bit more tour options. Don't get me wrong, Belize was a close second, with Mexico (Tulum) a very distant 3rd.

Yeah the better half wants a all-inclusive resort, I'm trying to find the best one down there. Also looking to stay away from the college kids, So we thought heading somewhere without the insane barscene would be great.

Sounds like a great time. I would be really interested in the Cave Tubing.

I have been to Belize 6 or 7 times, and there is no place I have enjoyed more. We have always stayed in San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye. It's not too touristy, which I really like. It is very laid back there.. the mode of transportation is bicycle or golf cart. Also good nightlife, excellent food and don't miss the chicken drop on Wednesdays.

The water is really beautiful there.. crystal blue. I've only done snorkeling, and while it is amazing, I've heard years ago it was much better, and has since had damage to the coral from various hurricanes. They do have a couple spots where you can snorkel with sting rays, nurse sharks, etc. While snorkeling there I've seen barracuda, eel, portuguese man of war, spotted eagle ray, shark, etc.

Diving, however is the main draw to Belize from what I've seen, and I hear it is incredible. I've always really wanted to dive Blue Hole, a 480 foot deep perfectly circular hole in the middle of the ocean.

I recommend to everyone I know to go vacation in San Pedro, it's the best!

I've been cave tubing in Belize. Lots of fun.

silentbob007 04-11-08 08:18 PM

I've been cave tubing as well. Fun stuff. I've only visited as a cruise ship passenger, and as such, I did not feel safe in Belize City. Outside of that, no probs.

Diving the Blue Hole is interesting. You are down around 150 feet weaving in and out of stalactites and look up to see sharks circling near the surface. But, it is more of a novelty than anything.

Anyway, be sure you make into the interior to see some Mayan sites, too. I highly recommend getting to see Actun Tunichil Muknal.
