Pa. Firefighter Wants Job Back After Setting Fire, Officials Say

POSTED: 9:48 am EDT March 24, 2008
UPDATED: 11:02 am EDT March 24, 2008

ERIE, Pa. -- Erie's first female firefighter is fighting to get her job back, even though officials say she admitted setting her father's house on fire in a suicide attempt.

Details of Mary Wolski's firing had been confidential. They were made public after she appealed her firing in Erie County Court last week.

Fire Chief Tony Pol wrote in Wolski's April 2007 termination letter that setting the December 2006 fire made her unsuited to be a firefighter because she posed a danger to others and herself. She was hired in 1997.

Her lawyer, Paul Susko, said officials violated her constitutional rights and lacked evidence to uphold the firing.

Erie District Attorney Brad Foulk said based on the law and circumstances of the fire, no charges were filed.
What the fuck is this woman thinking? She thinks she should be a firefighter again, after setting fire to a house? This is one of the weirder stories of the day. I hope that, not only does she not get her job back, that they go after her for the fire she set. She should be either in jail, or a crazy house. It was barely a year ago since the fire was set.

I must admit to getting a small amount of enjoyment out of seeing your username in conjunction with some of your posts. The association is sometimes too good.

So, she tried to kill herself, by setting fire to her father's house? I don't see how she wasn't charged with arson, or something similar, for doing what she did. As far as her getting her job back, I don't think I would want someone with her mental state to be doing a job that people's lives depend on.

I agree...just being mentally unstable enough to attempt suicide is something you would not want in somebody who needs to be focused and balanced on a job like firefighting. But she started a fire too??? Yeah, no job for you, lady.

Thank you. My point exactly.

Sounds like her father refused to press charges...

I say give this lady the top job at the local FD! While we're at it, let's start training meth addicts as pharmacists!

Never mind that she started a fire. Do we really want a firefighter who tried to off herself?

Has she ever actually admitted to vaginal possession? Has she been caught with a vagina on her person? Or is this all just baseless speculation on your part?

Not much of a firefighter if she didn't know how to set a properly fatal fire.

Pretty outrageous. On the plus side, it almost seems like you were born to post this article.

This is a little off topic, but do you specifically look for stories about fires, or did you just find this one by chance? Curious minds want to know

I'm not saying what she did was right, but 1) if she tried to kill herself, she probably has a mental illness, which is not a character flaw, and 2) the fire happened over a year ago. Perhaps she's received a ton of treatment for her illness (medication, therapy, hospitalization) since trying to commit suicide, and perhaps she's made huge progress and can now perform her job again?

I know, I know, no one here will cut her any slack for having a mental illness. It's much more the Otter way to just tear her limb from limb.

This was just random, this is the only thread I have ever started about fires. I didn't even think of it when I posted it. It just worked out that way.
