I got a settlement check and not sure why.

I got a check in the mail today from CenDyne Litigation Settlement Administration for $4.44. I searched on Google and found that CenDyne makes CD-Rom drives. Any idea why I would get a settlement check from them? I couldn't find anything helpful in regards to class action suits against them. Maybe I missed something. I know it's just $4.44 but I'm curious. I don't remember getting anything previously about this

Maybe you bought a system that had the drive.

It could be a scam, but if it was, the check would have been for a bigger amount.

Well it was made out to me and my current address. A place I've lived for 5.5 years. I haven't bought a brand name computer since 1999. I've bought CD-Rom drives but I don't know how they would have got my name and address.

The check is a US Bank check issued on 3/21/08 the address on it says:

CenDyne, Inc Litigation
Settlement Adminstrator
PO Box 1939
Burnsville, MN 55337

There is even a post card to send back to them saying I recieved it.

So do I cash it or what? That $4.44 is burning a hole in my countertop!

As long as there is nothing on the check that says endorsing it is agreeing to something, go ahead and cash it.

Many class action suits go through, and pay out to anyone who sent in their warrantee card, without everyone knowing about it.

It sounds like payment for a class action settlement that you may have been part of (usually the settlement itself is huge, but everyone only gets a very small amount. I'd imagine it has something to do with your drive). (If you've ever seen The Jerk, Steve Martin has to send individual checks for $1.09 to millions of people who bought his Opti-Grab, who sued him because it made them all cross-eyed. My favorite class action suit)

edit: above post was added about the class action suit while I had the message window open.

As already stated, I'd cash it as long as it doesn't switch you to anything, which would be stated where you endorse it.

If you want to be included in this lawsuit, do nothing.

And now you are nearly $4.50 richer. This hurts the company and shows them not to screw with people, and is in no way motivated by lawyers fees. Just ask John Edwards.

My guess: you applied for a rebate, Cendyne went bankrupt (they did), and didn't pay you the rebate. Lawsuit ensued and the plaintiffs were awarded $4.44 each.

I'm not sure why they think a check for $4.44 will make up for destroying human civilization through nuclear holocaust.

I also got a check but for $6.66 and am not sure why. I also don't remeber buying anything from Cendyne. I don't understand why the postcard, they will know I got when/if I cash it.
I googled cendyne litigation and found that when they went bankrupt they talk about rebates to 58,000 people of about $5 each.
I guess I will cash my check.

As a class action lawyer, there are many ways we can find information on the people in the class. So - there shouldn't be any problem with cashing the check.

I've received a few of these checks over the years, usually from a former employer that has been sued. I got $650 from BB once. I've got another one pending with a former company right now. I just fill out the form they send me and then in a few months a fat check usually shows up. Class action lawsuits rock!

Don't throw it away! Cash it, then throw the cash away. This will reduce inflation and anyone that sees you will think you are filthy rich because you are throwing money away. Then everyone will love you and we'll all be richer.

Does it say anything about needing to be endorsed in blood?

Wasn't that the name of the company that was working on artificial intelligence, that was blown up in Terminator 2?

You must report this on some tax form as income. I think its the stock one. Well, maybe if it didnt involve stock you dont have to. As they always say, Consult your Tax Advisor/Preparer.
