Beauty! I need to renew my XM in 3 weeks. Looks like I'm going to try to get locked into a low rate for as long as I possibly can.

Same here... except at the end of March. I can't decide if it's better to call now and 'cancel' to try and get the $77/year rate I got when I tried to 'cancel' last year, or wait until it expires and 'cancel'. I got a letter that says they'll automatically charge my credit card, though.

Not sure what this means for rates/rentention promos.

If the prices don't go up a lot whenever they feel like it then it's good for the consumer. Certainly better than both companies going under.

I understand why they study mergers to prevent price issues, but it's almost funny these days with

Cable TV (comcast) (how much do you have?)
wireless phone ($99 unlimited)
oil (how much do you have?)
airlines ($50 fuel surchage, will it stick?, $25 bag fee)

and so many other obviously using collusion to fix their pricing. Technically they are competing, but until one of them breaks ranks (which they figured out a long time ago that if they aren't greedy now and break ranks they can all make tons of money in the long run) the price keeps going up

I'm a little worried/curious to see which channels remain/get axed, or will all the channels be available?

I doubt it will happen this soon, but I'd love to hear the BBC1 coverage of the Glastonbury Music Festival come this June via Sirius

If I lose Ron and Fez I will cancel the service. Otherwise, I can't say I really care.

Very excited about this. I have to renew next week so I will most likely just go for 1 year. Have been doing the quarterly.

I am just happy to have PGA on Sirius now (when it all happens that is.)

Yeahhh!

Now they may have the bandwidth to

1) give me back my Super Shuffle (It is now Rolling Stones for 3 days)

2) No more talking on Sirius Hits 1 (It is like the Z-Morning Zoo)

I don't know if they will make the cut with Howard having his whole set up. Bubba in the afternoons and Ferrell at night is already a set schedule that seems to work. I don't know how many talk radio stations are needed.

You don't think there's room for 2 talk radio channels? There are at least 2 comedy channels. If I lose Ron and Fez I will be super fucking pissed. They only get 3 hours a day as it is.

I like just music. Can I get a lower rate so I can listen to my tunes without having to supplement the income of Bubba, Ron, Fez, Howard and the rest of those idiots? It's an all or nothing service - right?

(From the CNN story)
… In its decision, the Department of Justice determined that an XM-Sirius merger was not anti-competitive. The Justice Department argued that other media companies such as Clear Channel, CBS, or even Apple with its iTunes software and iPod music player served as alternate options for music and media customers…
Wow, I have no idea how they could say this with a straight face after blocking the DirecTV / Dish Network merger.

Not that I wanted DirecTV / Dish Network to merge, just as I didn’t want XM / Sirrius to merge – this is not going to result in lower prices for the consumer. More choices maybe, but definitely not lower prices.

The difference is, from the arguments I've heard, there are radio stations everywhere. And even if you don't live in a town where you don't have a station, you can pick up the signal from hundreds of miles in some places without issue. Satellite radio isn't needed for people to still get content. With DirecTV/Dish, some places don't have any cable access at all. So, by combining those companies, the people that live in Bumfuck, Iowa wouldn't have any competition for services. It makes some sense, but not enough to completely block the DirecTV/Dish merger.

Why does the FCC get to weigh in on this, even though they don't have control over the content?
