School me on Ventura, CA

I've really enjoyed the winter here in Colorado. I do enjoy snow.

I want to spend the next one in California and I've settled on Ventura. I'll probably move late summer, say end of july, early august.

Anyone live there or visit there often that can give me the lowdown on areas to live, dine, be entertained?

I'm not interested in buying a home there, just renting.

Gracias.

Not a bad little area. 30-40 minutes from Santa Barbara (and it's a beautiful drive), maybe an hour and a half from LA. Ventura Theater gets some national touring acts (if it's still open, not sure). Great Mexican food in nearby Oxnard.

Winter will be kind of cool and dreary at times, but if I recall correctly you used to live in Seattle so maybe it'll feel like home.

Six Flags Magic Mountain is in Ventura County. Really, not much to do there except for Magic Mountain/Theatre. If you don't mind driving, you could go down to Los Angeles area and/or Santa Barbara as jdodd mentioned.

To warn you that in summer time, it's pretty hot there - hotter than LA/OC.

I think I drove by Magic Mountain on my way to the Rose Bowl several years ago. Right off I-5, right?

Thanks. At least I now know where Ventura is.

The days are longer and the nights are stronger than moonshine.

I'd watch out for the alligator lizards in the air... IN THE AIR!

Magic Mountain is in the Newhall area off the I-5. While it may be in Ventura County, it is certainly not Ventura. Ventura is about 30 miles west of there. Ventura is a coastal city off the 101 freeway. As a coastal city, it has beaches and a much more mild climate than McHawkson describes.

I haven't been by Ventura for over a decade, so I can't really help you with much additional information.

Yeah, I knew it was on the 101. Didn't realize I-5 was a half hour from the coast. Thanks, jhagler. Living near the beach will be far more appealing!

Yes, Magic Mountain is off from I-5 near Valentia (sp?). I was speaking of county, not city. I have not been to Ventura city.

Magic Mountain is off the I-5 near Valencia (Newhall, Stevenson's ranch). It is still considered L.A. County.

When you jump on the 126 west you get taken straight into Ventura county.

We live in Valencia and drive to Ventura to soak up the sun and enjoy the beach every now and then. It's a nice area but stacked with hippie liberals

I should also mention that between Valencia and Ventura on the 126 is Toland Rd. This is a rd. that will seemingly go to a landfill.. It's actually a very good example of a "gravity hill". As you approach the entrance to the landfill you will be on a downward slope (and a pretty steep one at that). However if you put your car in neutral you will roll backwards up the hill.

If you like hippie liberals you should get months of entertainment out of that place.

Well, speaking of being entertained, you won't be THAT far from... ME!! And as you know, I am very entertaining.

If I find ANY good coffee here in SoCal, we can take you for coffee. Otherwise, it'll have to be the beach.

If you find yourself driving around Ventura and notice a historical park called "Olivas Adobe House", my adoptive family has roots here. My dad was born at the Adobe House. There's a family tree exhibit and my grandfather's name is listed. When I visited years ago, one of the park personnel told me to submit our information so me and my dad could be added to the family tree. I never got around to it but I should... one of these days.
