I got pulled over because of racial profiling

Driving downtown today and it was a cluster f*ck with SXSW in town. I was in a left hand turning lane and I wanted to go straight, so I pulled in front of a car at the last minute. A cop was right behind me and turned his lights on right away. I pulled over and gave him my license. He asked if I knew why I was pulled over and I said yes. He asked why did I do it when he was honking behind me telling me not to do it.I explained I didn;t hear him. He asked for my registration and the only one I had in the car was from last year. He went to his car while I waited. He came back and explained he could give me a ticket for both the illegal lane switch and not having my recent insurance, but he said since it had been since 2004 since I got a ticket he would let me go. He said he would however note in the system that I had been pulled over and he was going to note it as being for racial profiling.

I was pretty excited that I wasn;t getting ticket, so I didn;t ask him to elaborate, but thought that was kind of strange.

Summary: pulled over, no ticket given, got a warning, the reason in the system is racial profiling.

When will cops finally stop harassing honest white men?

You're white, right?

They note it as racial profiling? Maybe it was a joke.

Interesting, I would think they would want to keep that shady practice under wraps, but to have it as a code in the system...weird.

I was thinking the same thing.

Or do they have racial profiling quotas goals they must reach?

If it were a joke, that would make the cop a pretty ballsy individual, seeing as we live in such an uber-sensitive PC-society today.

During SXSW? It's a mess. Tough call on which to do. Parking is a mess, but in a cab, you will be paying to sit in traffic. If you do go downtown, try parking at the hotels. The Hilton (or is it a Marriott) right next to the convention center is $10 for 6 hrs which I took in a second rather than spending an hour looking for a spot.

He meant that he was going to say he pulled you over for no good reason, and that you hadn't done anything to warrant it.

Edited to add: That's a good thing.

Really? I was actually just being facetious. Then it had to be a joke, albeit an inappropriate one on his part.

I'd say he was joking, and sounds like he was pretty laid back. He could have easily given you a ticket for driving like that, and in MA, if your insurance, or registration are out of date, they can tow your car, and you can lose your license.

Eh. I've been pulled over multiple times for no reasons. Cops made me sit on the curb, while they looked through my car too.

I once was pulled over in Louisville, KY for no other reason (I believe) than there was Maine license plates on the rental car. He said I had driven over the line (on the express way) and that could be true but hardly seems like a reason to pull someone over. There were three other guys in the car and who knows we may have looked kinda shady. Come to think of it, we were all white and the cop was black. I just told him we were on our way to the airport and he let us go, no ticket or warning.

Put the video online so 99% of everyone here can rage about how out of line the cop was.

My insurance is up to date, I just didn't have the most recent proof of insurance with me.

At least you got away from the ticket without the Bad Lieutenant treatment.
