Wal-Mart cahsier begs Muslim veiled customer, "Please don't stick me up."

I think what this cashier said is hilarious.

The Muslim customer, and Wal-Mart management, have no sense of humor.

Wal-Mart Apologizes to Muslim Woman Who Complained She Was Mocked by Cashier in Utah Store

RIVERDALE, Utah (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. apologized to a Muslim woman who said she was mocked because of her face veil.

"Please don't stick me up," a cashier told the shopper on Feb. 2, according to The Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Wal-Mart apologized Monday in a letter signed by Rolando Rodriquez, a vice president and regional general manager. It was released Tuesday by the council's Nevada chapter.

"I can assure you that the associate in question was disciplined in accordance with our employment policies as a result of the situation," Rodriguez said without disclosing details.

Rodriguez said employees at the Riverdale store would undergo "sensitivity training," specifically in the Islamic faith and Muslim culture.

At Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., spokesman Phillip Keene confirmed the letter and declined further comment.

"We applaud Wal-Mart for taking appropriate action to resolve this incident," said Yasser Moten, executive director of the council's Nevada chapter. The group doesn't have an office in Utah.

That makes me wonder: My bank has a sign posted saying you must remove any hat or sunglasses when entering. It makes logical sense but how does that jibe with muslim requirments? Wouldn't that encourage bank robbers to dress in muslim garb?

I think being forced to wear a burlap sack whenever I left the house is slightly more offensive than a joke, but I'm just a dumb kafir.

Too soon?

I'm not sure why this is hilarious. Would it be equally as funny if the woman was black and the cashier said the same comment?

You would think someone from Utah would be more tolerant of silly clothing requirements dictated by god.

The point I don't get--the story glosses over it--is whether the cashier was being snarky or sincerely frightened.

She's have to be sincerely dumb to think it was a thief's outfit, but Wal-Mart thrives by employing the dumb...

I can see disciplining her if it was a case of being snarky. But I'd hate to think some barely-there-IQ-girl got in trouble because our society unwisely now allows special groups to hide their identities in public.
