Cars with European front plates - is this cool or something?

I was driving to work today and pass a blue VW something or other. It was one of those small hatch back / box looking cars - that kids like to race around in.

The driver was an Asian kid with a be-dazzled hat and a hood over the hat (fast and furious style)

As I look in my rear view mirror I see a European front licence plate. I think - the driver is a young Asian kid, he does not look like he brought this car over from Europe..

so I slow down and let him pass me to look at his rear licence plate - which is from New Jersey

so - I ask - is it a trend to put on fake front licence plates to make a car look like it is from Germany?

I immediately file those with Europlates under DOUCHEBAG.

Sure, maybe (just maybe) there are a couple cool folks with Europlates, but there are certainly enough good people without them. With so many people in the world, sometimes you gotta play the percentages.

It's a modification essentially..
Something to differentiate his car from others.

And like any mod it's subjective as to whether it's cool or not.

They don't bother me as much as clip on exhaust tips that make annoying sounds or people that bump their radios with their fake gold liscense plate frames rattling to no end. I agree that 90% of the time, they are lame, but I can understand how some people like small touches like that to their car, and like em. And have seen them on show cars that were obviously bought here, but still looked pretty good.

but I gotta ask, I was wearing a cap last night, and it got cold so I put my hoodie up too (while walking outside). Does that make me fast and furious?

Damn, you stole the exact word out of my mouth. I have seen them on shitty cars before too. People just think they are way cooler that they are.

I guess I'm a douchebag... almost. I bought one for my BMW but never put it on. It's on the wall now, just to the right of my PC.

If people with those license plates are uncool, so is anyone with any stickers, decals, antenna balls, anything hanging off the mirror, anything "decorating" the car inside, etc.

So basically, unless your car looks like a rental car, you're a douchebag.

Negative Ghostrider. We reserve the right to make the distinction. As one of "them", you have to just sit and take it.

Actually, I don't have anything on my car. No stickers, no decals, no dreamcatchers. I even took the license plate frame off. So, no I'm not one of them.

Rental cars always have the company sticker on them though

Down here in Florida the only sticker I ever see on rental cars anymore is the tiny little barcode on the window. I seem to recall they did an industry wide procedural change after all the tourist attacks in the 80s and 90s to make rental cars less identifiable to criminals.

I see them a lot here in Orlando. It's a trend, huh? I kinda thought everyone shipped their calls across the pond.

Yeah, it's lame unless it's real. My friend bought back his Fairlady Z (Nissan 350Z here in the states) and he kept the japaneses plate in front. You can tell it's an import because it's right hand drive. The only drawback is when you hit a toll booth it's hard to hand the cash over. It's a reach.

I like them.
But for them to look decent you have to have them on the right type of car.

Is it cool or pretentious to have the James Bond plate option?

Normally in Australia you get a US or Brazilian kind of plates. But now in New South Wales, Australia you have actually the choice. You can officially get a pair of plates that look like from Germany. Pretty neat on a Mini.

An idea may be for the US where anyway Euro cars are more and more popular...

Colorado forces us to have their state plates on the front and back.
