Please Recommend Your Favorite Bank

I've had it with Bank of America and wish to find a bank with proper customer service (or the best that you can get from a bank). Please let me know what banks you like and why. Thanks a lot. I do appreciate it.

online banks like ing and gmac have better interest rates. i belong to chase, but could care less about customer service. I never go into one. Everything is dealt with online

The only way you will find that is most likely a small hometown bank. All of the large multi-state banks are simply too bloated to care about an individual customer.

I actually like Bank of America. Mostly because of their excellent online site. Given all of the complaints about the customer service, I feel lucky that I have not had any problems.

I also like Key Bank, again because of their excellent online site. But they are a regional (midwest) bank.

I've been very happy with Chase for personal banking. Their online banking stuff is very easy to use and I pay all my bills through it with no problems for years. Direct deposits are handled fast as well.

I use Fifth/Third for a small "play" account, but I really don't care for their online banking at all.

Same here. Of course, the last time I actually went into one was to set up my account.

I like BofA simply because, around here, they have many more ATMs than anyone else. I have always gotten decent CS from them as well.

Yeah, I've been with Bank of America for 9 years and I actually like them.

Your best choice may be a local credit union.

Thanks for the replies so far. Just wanted to add that I'm in the bay area. If you are at an online bank, does that mean you have to have them send you checks instead of going to an ATM?

When I saw this thread, I bet myself that someone would post "sperm bank" within the first three replies.

See if you're eligible for a local credit union. You become a member so while they certainly still have late fees and such, they're generally not as abusive as a 'real' bank. My CU gave us a free debit card, free online banking, free online billpay, free use of CU ATMs (still under the federal rules for withdrawing from savings account though), cashiers checks for 1.00 (they used to be free). The couple times we've screwed up and racked up some overdraft fees they've usually credited us back some of the charges.
Ours cost either 1.00 or 5.00 to join and there's no minimum balance (for our accounts, obviously the more money you keep with them the better a deal you can get).

meh.. i dont deal with the banks

but corrie really prefers BOA. to an extent that she continues to use them for our primary account, even though there isnt a single branch office in alabama... so she cant physically go to one very easily
like the other comments.. she likes them most because of their excellent online service and offerings

I use two small town banks for checking (must be nice) and for customer service it is the only way to go. I know everyone there, they will do stuff over the phone, I can always talk to them, etc.

But for mortgages, etc. they suck. But for those that care, Charles Schwab is currently running a HELOC deal for 1.01% under prime. They even pay up to $500 to get you out of your current HELOC. I don't owe anything on my current HELOC, but I switched because I may want to buy something some day.

The major chains suck. I've had both Washington Mutual and Bank of America and both can go screw themselves. I won't even go near Wells Fargo.

Go with a credit union. It'll help you out in the long run.

I second Commerce.
It is open on a lot of holidays other banks are closed, opens early , closes late, open on Sunday...and when you call customer service...no matter what time of day...you get a REAL person.
No automated crap to deal with.
