Shots ring out - What do you do?

What do you do?

Call 911?

Take cover?

Nothing?

Do you hear gunshots regularly where you live?

In the neighborhoods I lived in where I would expect to hear gunshots I was never sure if it was a shot or a car backfiring or a dumpster banging. Noises like that happen fast and then they're over and you're never really sure.

Now screams...I listen to see if they're drunks having fun or someone really in trouble. For real trouble I call 911.

I hear shots all the time where I live, of course it's usually people shooting deer, ducks, geese, or turkeys so I think nothing of it. If I were to hear shots somewhere inside city limits I would pull out my handgun and figure out where they were coming from and what was going on.

There is also a clear difference between a gunshot, a car backfiring, and a dumpster banging.

It depends, like other posters mentioned. I hear shots in the area all the time (I live on the outskirts of town) and don't worry about it. If I was downtown or in a store or what have you, I'd take cover first, then look around for the shooter. If I spotted him and wasn't in a gun-free-zone, I'd draw and prepare to defend myself and others. If I was in a gun-free-zone, I'd look for an escape route.

Every once in a while I hear what I think might be a shotgun but I've never heard a "real" gunshot in my life.

Gunshots ranged out like a bell
I grabbed my nine - All I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car, slammed on the gas

Yes, I hear shots ring out at least once a week. There's a skeetshooting club down the road that practices on weekends.

One place I lived, the answer was: go back to bed, they aren't shooting at us.

Another place I lived, the answer was: go about your business, they are probably shooting a snake.

Another place, the answer was: duck!

Here, the answer would be: call the cops.

Personally, I don't care. Some people though think if you get shots as a baby, it might increase your risk for autism.
