Vegas night clubs

I posted another question about things to do in Vegas, but I have another question too.

One of the things I know my friends will want to do is go out to at least one and maybe a few clubs.

First of all can anybody suggest some good ones? I've honestly never been to a club in Vegas before and don't know anything about the whole scene.

I'm also wondering how exactly it works. I mean I'll be going with 2 other guys and 5 girls. Now, myself and the other 2 guys aren't exactly trolls, but we don't exactly fit the "Vegas club sterotype" either. We can clean up just fine and can pretend to be club rats but still. The girls, on other hand, will fit right in. How does it work at the trendy places like Pure or LAX? I mean would us guys even get in? Do they only let good looking girls and VIP's in or what's the deal?

That's actually a valid question in this case since it makes it easier to get in the hotter the girls are.

If you are staying in the hotel/casino that houses the club, you generally can bypass the line by showing your key card. At least that's how it worked when I stayed at TI and went to Tangerine. Tangerine was pretty cool - they have an indoor section and outdoor section which was nice.

Drai's is a good 'after-hours' club too.

Sorry, no pictures, but they are quite attractive. They were on the dance team in college and to be on the team you had to have that "certain quality" ya know. Basically, they're all the type of girls that I'm sure clubs want...good looking and fun loving.

We'll be at the MGM, so any word on Studio 54 or Tabu? I know Tabu claims to be an "ultra lounge" and it's a bit different I guess. I took it to mean that it's slightly less loud and doesn't have as much emphasis on dancing as some of the other clubs there. Plus it's pretty small.

Where's Drai's?

Drais is in the old Barbary Coast, now called Bill's Gambling Hall. Yeah, the casino doesn't look like much (although I love it), but the club is downstairs and is quite nice. It's more "after-hours" - I don't think it opens until midnight.

I'm not a club guy, but I've gone with female co-workers to Jet, Tryst, Pure, and Light (no idea if all of those still exist) over the past couple of years. If you're with girls, especially if they outnumber you, you'll probably get into most places with little effort.

You should be able to find VIP passes just from walking around the various places. With those you'll be able to bypass bigger lines, even though you'll probably still stand in shorter ones at more popular spots.

You might as well as just get a hooker and call it a day.

It's cheaper than going to clubs and you'll at least get some at the end of the night.

[I did the club scene when I was younger -- but now that the only club I actually ever liked, Ice, was shut down -- I could care less.]

Last time at Pure had to hand the bouncer an extra $30 each (3 guys 3 girls). There were groups of dudes offering even more but they still couldn't get in. Tao is a bit easier to get in, plus if you eat dinner there you can get in no prob.

Might be difficult to hit several clubs, as you will be standing in lines. A Idea is to get into one of those VIP services (Someone will meet you, get you on the VIP list, get you inside and get you table/bottle service).

Having the 5 girls to 3 guy ratio is good, but as always, having many more girls to guy ratio is good, especially if the girls are good looking.

So my advise is to stick to one club, or get on a real vip list, so you can club hop.

Some of the 'hot' clubs are Ghostbar and Rain at the Palms, Lax at Luxor, Prive at planet hollywood, Light at Bellagio, Body English at Hard rock, Ice.

Be prepared to pay out the wazzoo for club prices.

Ghostbar isn't really a dancing club. Rain is pretty good. I also heard good things about the place in the Bellaggio, but that was a few years ago. Light, I think it's called.

Also, it's much much easier to get into clubs if you're a guest in the hotel.

How's Tao at the Venetian?

The whole Tao complex also has an Asian/Chinese restaurant that I wanted to go to regardless of the club but I've heard that if you eat at the restaurant you won't have any problems getting into the club.

This used to be my specialty up until 3 years ago. But I have avoided vegas since then, and have grown out of that clubbing phase lately. Trust me in that I was a veteran clubber that travelled around the world specifically for clubbing/music.

Advice from back then so don't take it literally (only typing this long thread because it lets me re-live my past ) This is probably more than you want to know, but here goes:

If you just want to go out and dance and have a good time with your friends, then there is nothing wrong with picking any of the mega clubs to go to. But I always went clubbing for the good music and to meet and hang out with cool people. Sometimes drugs were involved, but not usually.

Back then, all the clubs mentioned in this thread sucked ass during the weekends(except for Drai's), and even Drai's sucked until about 5AM when the real after hours partying kicked in. If you aren't open minded to the drug culture (you don't have to do them, but you need to be able to mix with it), then you are probably better off sticking to the tourist clubs in the casinos (those mentioned above sans drai's). Not knowing whats going on, the safest bet for a good club would be the one in the Hard Rock (not sure what its called now as its always changing).

Tangerine used to be cool to go to on thursday nights, but on weekends, the locals and veteran clubbers left it to the tourist/vibe-less crowds. Similarly, the other big casino clubs were good on mid-week nights, but you had to match a specific club to a specific night (not sure what they are now but could find out with a couple of emails to local friends).

The key (normally kept secret from people like the OP, no offense) is to hit the clubs with the locals or those that go to vegas with specific clubs in mind. That is where the best vibe will be. If you want that vibe, look for the SIN (service industry nights), those are always moving around from club to club.

Occasionally the popular clubs had great weekends when they would bring in a big name dj to attract the clubbing veterans, but that is when they start charging $50 cover changes, and if you get there late, you need to grease the bounce with an additional $50 a person.

VIP/Table service is very pricey, but often was necessary depending on the size of your group, and what was going on with the club that night. If this is an option, then I always get in touch with a local host and make arrangements ahead of time.

From places mentioned in this thread, old reputations were (they may have changed):
Ghostbar - good warmup bar, nice eye candy
Light- Usually sucked, way too many hookers trying to sell that "what happens in vegas, stays in vegas" cliche.
Studio54 - Crowd sucks, all tourists that want to go clubbing for the first time in ages, or people looking for that one night stand (not that there is anything wrong with it, but many women don't want that, and it shows by the vibe in the crowd).
Rain - Good venue, crowd can be hit or miss. Music was cheezy.
TOA- never been, but its known as a place that can be great when they bring in a good dj, otherwise, its another typical casino club.
Pure - Similar to Light, but not as bad
LAX - Used to be RA which was usually a great night, but havent been since it changed.
Tabu (Caramel, and other ultra lounges) - good places to start the night off. Talk to and meet people. Often this is a good way to find out where the best parties are that night.

The way we used to do it was hang out at lounges and bars from after dinner until 1AM or so, then head to the clubs when the tourist/innexperienced start to get tired and thin out from the clubs. Then go somewhere where a good DJ is playing good music, or where we know the locals will be. Hang there from about 2AM until 4 or 5AM, getting the drink on, etc.

Then either grab a quick bite to eat before, or head straight to the afterhours either at Drai's or a different place. Afterhours typically go from 5AM to about 10AM or noon. With the locals, around noon, they usually move the party to someone's huge house with a pool party, that goes on throughout the day. You have to mix and mingle with them to get this info. Sleep from 4PM to 8PM, repeat.

Damn I miss the days of Utopia, Glo, etc.

As for eating at a restaurant, then sticking around for the club afterwards, you end up sitting there with a dead crowd as some people will trickle in and out between 10PM and midnight, but that is the worst time to go in terms of crowd and vibe. Now like I said in the beginning, if all you want to do is party with the friends in your group and dance for a bit, nothing wrong with this at all.

Now let me know if you need advice for London, Spain, rest of Europe, Asia, or other places

Thanks man. That was pretty informative. The people in my group are definitely not "experienced clubbers" like you described yourself. That sounds like a lot of fun under the right circumstances, but I don't know if we could handle that whole vibe. I guess we're nerds. Ha ha.

More than likely we'll end up hanging with ourselves for the most part. We wouldn't be opposed to bopping around with some strangers and/or locals but hitting up a house party at 8 am probably wouldn't be on the agenda. We'll probably hang out at the pool and the girls will go shopping and all that kind of stuff during the day, grab dinner, maybe a show and then hit the town at night till 3 or 4 am at the latest most likely.

I don't club anymore (been a lot of years and usually knew someone anyway) but is it better to do 5 girls 3 guys at once? Or break it up. 2 girls/1 guy ... 2 girls/1guy and hope for the other 2?

I always got a kick at clubs in NYC where there would 4-6 guys trying to bribe the doorman to let them in. There is no way in hell, unless they were famous, they were letting in a group of guys w/o women in.

Now it looks like it'll be 2 guys and 2 girls at the most and possibly only 1 girl.

The one girl is hot, but can 2 schmucks get in with only 1 girl even if she is hot?

If we decided not to mess with the whole club hassle any recommendations for some fun lounges where you don't need 6 hot chicks or to be a VIP to get in?

a very brief conversation with a friend, and he tells me Drai's is still the after hours, and Moon (at the palms) is a current hot spot.

I haven't had any problems getting in without girls other than Drai's after a big fight night. If you plan to go somewhere very popular, then go a bit earlier (even though that conflicts with my earlier post).

Goto this website for all your uptodate nightclub info

http://jackcolton.com/

I personally went to the Bank and Tryst and they rocked. I was so impressed with Tryst. Tao, Pure and LAX are probably the 3 other 'hot' clubs at the moment with Jet at the Mirage coming close too.
