Do you write product reviews?

Back when I was building my own computers, I used to buy most of my components at Newegg. Considering how quickly technology changed and how hard it was for me to keep up with the latest and greatest, I relied heavily on user reviews. If I was looking for a new motherboard, I'd find the boards with the specs I needed and then simply pick out the ones with the best reviews. If a board had 100 reviews with a 4 out of 5 average, I was confident that would be a good purchase for me.

I continue to do this to this day. I was just trying to find some new 2.0 computer speakers, and it was easy for me to pick out a decent pair from Amazon without having to become an expert on the products. I understand there is a "shill" factor on some of these things, but if there are a bunch of reviews that are overwhelmingly positive, I have no problems taking the plunge.

However, it occurred to me that I never actually write them myself. I just don't have the inclination to take the time. But I rely on them that I'm glad someone does.

So, do you? And for what?

I usually only write reviews/feedback if the product is BAD. I don't want someone else getting suckered into a bad product, especially if the product advertises something that isn't true.

I voted "yes" but I've only written one and there wasn't a better choice.

I wrote a review for a beginning GIMP book. 15 out of 17 found it useful

newegg product reviews are worthless, as 99% of them are from overclockers, which is useless for either the average user or someone who needs a stable system for mission critical software.

I was tempted to write one for a 25 foot VGA cable we received at work, and claim that I was able to get 27 feet out of it, but I didn't because I thought someone might actually think the cable was actually 27 feet long.

On Newegg, you have to sift through many reviews to find someone who says something important, and then you do a search on Google for it. The reviews do come in handy sometimes.

I write restaurant and store reviews on Yelp. That site helped me find some great local places to eat, and places to avoid. Still a few too many cluttering "itz awesome!!!ll!!!" reviews though.

I wasn't into overclocking, but I definitely read enthusiast sites and built my machines primarily for gaming, so an overwhelmingly positive endorsement of a particular component was good enough for me.

I'm glad that those of you who write reviews are doing it - helps me make easier decisions.

The only review I made was for a movie on IMDB.

BTW, I rate this thread a 4 out of 5.

My review of the then-upcoming Office Space DVD predicted it would be a cult hit.

I write only when I get paid to. Well, except for on this message board, of course. And a couple other similar places. But I never write for online retailers like Amazon.com and the such.

Nope. I'll occasionally rate, but very rarely.
