I took a day trip out there when I was in L.A. It's a nice quaint little town. Sort of a big "ped mall" feel to it, with small shops and things. They also have a lot of things like glass-bottom boat tours and snorkeling and things. I thought it was nice.

We were there during our honeymoon. Our mexico cruise got re-routed. It was one of he hottest days for that time of the year. We rented a golf cart and drove around all the public parts of the island. They have a botanical gardens which we were thinking about going into... but all the pictures of it made it look like a desert and we can see that any time we want. The beaches are sand then rock then water, so they kind of suck. The shops are ok, but nothing special. We most likely won't go back. I hear it's great for SCUBA though, and they had parasailing for $75. I wanted to do that, but didn't want to spend the money for it.

It's a nice little weekend getaway to take a date of sig other. Avalon harbor is quite picturesque. There were shops, boutiques, and restaurants to enjoy as well as a few musems from what I recall. There's also a tour of the island which is largely undeveloped and there is wildlife.

Don't they have Buffalo there too?

I've always wanted to go, having been here in So Cal all my life, but everyone I know who's gone has said it's nothing but a "tourist trap".

Yes. A herd of buffalo were taken there back in the 20s for a movie and their descendants still live on the island.

Overall, Catalina is decent for a day trip or a quiet romantic getaway. Just don't expect it to be like Hawaii.

Catalina is best for just one short day. I used to scuba diving there, it's awesome - through it's no tropical-style underwater, but fun to dive.

By the way Catalina airport is probably the scariest small airport I've ever seen. Cliff on approach, cliff at end of runway and the runway is higher in the middle than it is at either end, so that it is hard to judge the approach. There used to be bits of wreckage at the bottom of the cliff on approach.

I'm gonna disagree. Its worth an overnight stay (but only for one night). Great place to take your mistress on a mini-getaway, while you tell the wife you have a one night business trip somewhere.

I didn't feel it was a tourist trap as much as a place to get away for a night. going there for a day, then coming back, I can see it as a tourist trap as you would likely just walk the strip of shops and head back on the boat, but Ive usually stayed at least one night. That was about 7 and 10 years ago, so things may have changed though.

It's a good place if you're a tourist or retarded.

Avalon is pretty much a tourist trap. There's decent camping, hiking and kayaking elsewhere on the island.
