PHOENIX -- A restaurateur angry at being denied a liquor license threatened to shoot people at the Super Bowl and drove to within sight of the stadium with a rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition before changing his mind, federal authorities said.

Kurt William Havelock said in a manifesto mailed Sunday to media outlets that he would "shed the blood of the innocent," according to court documents.

The documents say he was armed with an AR-15 assault-style rifle when he reached a parking lot near University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, where pregame activities were happening.

"He waited about a minute and decided he couldn't do this," FBI agent Philip Thorlin testified at a detention hearing for Havelock on Tuesday.

Havelock's father testified that his son then called his fiancee and met his parents at his Tempe condominium.

"He was very upset, he was sobbing hysterically," Frank Havelock said. "He said, 'I've done something terribly, terribly wrong.' "

Kurt Havelock, 35, turned himself in and was charged Monday with mailing threatening communications. He is being held without bail. It was unclear whether he had a lawyer, and additional hearings have yet to be scheduled.

Federal authorities say Havelock was upset because his establishment was recently denied a liquor license by the city of Tempe, like Glendale a Phoenix suburb.

In the eight-page manifesto, Havelock said that the original site of the planned massacre was Phoenix's Desert Ridge Marketplace near Scottsdale, but that "scum and villainy" are in Scottsdale and that instead he would "shed the blood of the innocent."

"How many dollars will you lose? And all because you took my right to own a business from me," the manifesto said.

This seems like one of those situations where he wont get much punishment, but the penalty should be much stiffer than the actual crime committed. Wonder if this guy will go through with it one day. I certainly don't think people who would get that close to doing something of that magnitude should be free to walk around (AND BUY GUNS!).

That's weird, because I have a bathtub caked with scum and villainy and a shed filled with the blood of the innocent.

What would the effect of his firing random shots into the crowd been on the game? Maybe New England would have then had the perfect season?

Thank you!

While the guy's obviously reached a state where he needs psychiatric treatment, he didn't go on a killing spree so he's not some monster. His life wasn't going the way he planned and it got to him. He had some violent thoughts and started to act on them, but close to the moment of truth he snapped out of it somewhat and decided not only to abort his planned killing spree, but to turn himself in. If more people did what he did we'd obviously have fewer tragedies like Columbine, Virginia Tech, and that mess in Missouri yesterday.

Drunkensteins
Tempe, Arizona is trying to block a Halloween-themed bar after learning its owner suggested on a forum he wasn’t telling the city the real name of the business — Drunkenstein’s. Kurt Havelock was trying to get a liquor license for a bar/restaurant called The Haunted House, a procedure that the City Council usually passes quickly.

But before a Thursday vote on the license, a resident passed out copies of the forum to City Council members that obviously irritated the elected officials. Under the name “Head Noisician,” Havelock wrote in the blog “I’m pretty sure the city council wouldn’t approve of Drunkenstein’s ... the actual name above the bar.”

On www.collectiveunderground.com, the “Head Noisician” described the place as a restaurant, Halloween bar, Irish coffee house and music/arts venue that would include “ear-piercing death metal solos.”

Havelock tried to assure the city he would only post a Drunkenstein’s sign someplace inside. Councilwoman Barb Carter moved to approve the license. The council chambers fell silent. An alternate motion against it passed 6-1, with Carter dissenting.

But the bar could still open. The council’s vote is merely advisory. The final decision rests with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. It’s not uncommon for that group to approve a license despite municipal objections.

Havelock is trying to open the bar at 6463 S. Rural Road. His posting said he’d welcome all kinds of music and entertainment. He wants a night of “rockin’ & wrastlin’” with Kamala the Ugandan Giant, a singer and member of World Wrestling Entertainment, also known as the WWE.

People who know the dude by his nickname, "NIL":

Exactly why his life should be ended. I mean if he changed his mind once, what is preventing him from doing it again! We cannot have these types of people freely roaming the streets!!

Not at all. I just thought this is the common response to threads like this. I was just trying to fit in.
