Death by Q-tip

MONTREAL A Quebec coroner is calling for stricter product warnings from Health Canada after linking the death of a Montreal man to his use of cotton ear swabs.

Daniel St-Pierre, 43, died from meningitis last year after an infection from his outer ear migrated through his perforated eardrum and killed him, the coroner concluded.

Mr. St-Pierre had been a frequent user of cotton swabs, which probably ended up giving him an ear infection through overuse and repeated rubbing, coroner Jacques Ramsay said.

He then used a swab "with maybe a little more vigour than usual," which perforated his eardrum, letting the outer ear's infection travel into his inner ear, the coroner said.
Full story at link.

Yikes. I'll have to be careful. But still, the idea of having ear gunk grosses me out.

most ear doctors tell you you shouldn't stick anything SMALLER than your elbow in your ear...

and for good reason...

morons are liable to puncture the tympanic membrane and kill themselves... lol...

at least soak the Q-tip in 80% or higher isopropyl alcohol before use...

A: it sterilizes any Meningitis or Staph or etc. around the area... you will get a clean sterile ear... not many know that colds and flu can go in through your ear... the alcohol prevents this...

B: that solution dissolves earwax on contact therefore you will be much less likely to 'scrub' a damn hole in your ear... you will also have a much cleaner ear canal...

better yet, pour a cap full of 80% or greater isopropyl into your ear, leave for 30-40 seconds and empty... all the benefits none of the risk...

I'm not feeling too well
I should've known using a rusty nail to clean out my ears was a bad idea

But digging around for that golden ear butter is so satisfying.

Have had two docs say not to use Q-Tips... at all. Use eardrops that clear out wax instead. Of course, then there are those that say the wax is supposed to stay there anyway.

I would buy one of those. I bought some scoop type thing but it has a guard and does not go in far enough.

I dont have wax, they just itch like hell. Like little spiders are in there.

Ive had issues with wax the last few years. I take pen caps and dig like hell with the skinny part of the cap. Scraping my ear canal until I dont get any more wax or I start to get red(blood I assume) on the cap. Then my ears will start leaking clear fluid 10-30 minutes later to the outer part of my ear canal, then it crusts up and hurts like hell. Its disgusting yet I keep doing it, Im sure my digging is probably causing more wax to form. My doctor says to get one of those little plastic water bulbs that you use with babies and flush my ears out. Ive had the doctor flush my ears out with their multi hundred dollar device metal device that kinda looks like a caulking gun, huge chunks come out when they do that, its awesome. But yeah, Qtips dont really do the trick for me anymore, I like the hard plastic allowing me to scrape the scabs/wax.

Constantly cleaning your ears is simply some manifestation of OCD. Generally, there's no reason to do it. A simple daily wipe on the outside with a washcloth is enough. Contrary to what Bandoman would have you believe, just because there's a hole there doesn't mean that you need to stick something in it.

I use Q-Tips every day. I guess I'm lucky to be alive.
