Posted: 8:24 PM- President Gordon B. Hinckley of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died this evening. He was 97.
Hinckley's life spanned the 20th century, a time marked by LDS global outreach and technological advances. Hie saw his church evolve from a tiny sect in the Intermountain West to a respected religious movement with more than 13 million members worldwide. He embraced each new communication device, from radio to satellite to YouTube, as a chance to spread the Mormon word.

Hmmm...will have to check with my dad to see if he's a relative. Not that we're Mormon, and not that there's anything wrong with being Mormon but being a Kimball, I tend to be realated to most of these people.

My entire family is greatly saddened by this news.

He's been around a long time, and it seemed that he would live a lot longer still - even if he did appear to lose a little bit of his vitality after the death of his wife of nearly 70 years back in 2004. Still, it's comforting to know that he and his wife are together again.

He was a good man who lived a long life - may he rest in peace.

Is one of your relatives looking for a one-armed man?

I missed this news last night, but when I ran by a church with its flag at half-mast this morning I knew something was up. The newspaper had a 10 page supplement.

By all accounts a very charming and personable man. He had a media background, and was the first LDS president to court the newspapers and hold press conferences. Mike Wallace tried to rake him over the coals for 60 Minutes, and became a lifelong personal friend instead.

Also instrumental in trying to downplay the word Mormon and highlight the churches' longer official name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints-- and its logo with the words "Jesus Christ" twice as large as the rest of the text... (In response to the Evengelicals, often vocal in their denying that LDS is Christian...)

On the downside: Also responsible for the church's ever-growing right-wing politicization. His anti-gambling and anti-same-sex-marriage crusades were fairly successful.

Should be an interesting ride for the LDS Church with Thomas Monson at the helm.

RIP Pres. Hinckley...

But what if the Lord tells me to....

Gave instructions to try those persons who were preaching, teaching, or practicing the doctrine of plurality of wives: for, according to the law, I hold the keys of this power in the last days; for there is never but one on earth at a time on whom the power and its keys are conferred; and I have constantly said no man shall have but one wife at a time, unless the Lord directs otherwise. Joseph Smith(see TPJS 324).
