Darwin Nominees For 2008

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22856248

OCALA, Fla. - A car traveling at high speed down a private airport runway ran off an embankment and was airborne for 200 feet before smashing into a tree early Saturday, killing all five young men in the vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Investigators did not know whether the BMW was alone or was racing another car on the air strip at the exclusive "fly-in" community of Jumbolair Aviation Estates, where pilot-actor John Travolta has a home, officials said.

According to the preliminary investigation, the car ran off the 85-foot-high embankment at the end of the runway. When it struck the large tree, the car split in half, scattering wreckage over an area of 200 square feet.

Three of the five occupants were ejected, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Burroughs.

"It's too early in the investigation to determine a speed and also to determine whether seat belts were in use at the time of the crash," Burroughs said.

Two of the five men ages 18 to 20 were from Ocala, two were from Fairfield and one was from Anthony, but it was not clear if any of the men lived within the gated community

I'm speechless.

Yes, the death of five kids is, indeed, hilarious.

But what about the tree. It died, too.

And what did we learn from this article?

John Travolta has a home in the Jumbolair Aviation Estates.

It's going to be on the test people!

no, it's tragic. However, their stupidity is what caused it.

A very similar accident happened here. 4 kids were speeding, hit something and rammed into a wall of rocks (a culvert is it? I'm not sure of the name).

Anyways, it's really hard to pity people when they kill themselves by sheer stupidity.

Good riddance. At least they didn't kill anyone else.

Seems to me that the only one that "deserved to die" was the driver. How do you know that the rest of them weren't screaming their heads off for him to stop?

I thought Darwin Award nominees were usually somewhat unique in their execution? This just seems like an everyday "idiot driving too fast" situation. Maybe if he had driven into a plane instead of a tree...

Interesting phrasing you used there at the end.

Oh, it was somewhat unique.

They tried to make a 2008 BMW fly, and were successful for over 60 yards.

Young/teen drivers are usually full of themselves. It's almost always the same thing. They're 1) barely qualified to drive, 2) inebriated, 3) driving too fast, and 4) never wearing seat belts. It's one less idiotic driver off the road. I never lose any sleep over these kinds of things, let alone feel any sympathy for their friends and family. A tragic accident is one thing. This was pure stupidity.

Yep. Screw 'em. Never mind the fact that they could've killed some innocent person minding his/her own business.

The image I have is a car full of NICK HOGANS all screaming like bitches as the car goes airborne.

Bye bye Douchebags. Thanks for ending your assault on the safety of humanity.

When I die, I want to go peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

I'd blame/nominate the driver. The other 4 people in the car probably didn't have a say in the matter.
