How many jobs have you had in your life?

It's my birthday tomorrow and I'll be 39 (yes this is partly a way to get some "Happy Birthdays") and I've been thinking about how long I have to work until I can even hope to afford to retire. I started working with the Sheriff's Department at 30, and will have to work until I'm at least 60 until I can pull it off. I was thinking that if I had started when I was 21 I would be only 12 years away from unemployed bliss.

But on the other hand, would I be the person i am if I hadn't gone through the trials and worked the "character building" shit jobs? Believe me I worked a lot of them:

Paperboy (in Alaska... walking... in the snow)
Burger King (Alaska)
McDonalds (Alaska)
Dairy Queen (Alaska)
Skippers (Alaska)
Parking lot attendant at a bookstore (Portland, OR)
7-11 clerk -robbed twice (Portland, OR)
Dishwasher for an all you can eat buffet (Las Vegas)
Chef's Assistant for another all you can eat buffet (Las Vegas)
Credit Manager at Montgomery Wards (Las Vegas)
Night stock boy at Lucky's grocery store (Las Vegas)
7-11 clerk -robbed once (Las Vegas)
US Navy (4 years)
Computer sales and installation (Alaska)
Retail TV sales at Silo (San Diego)
Department manager at Wal Mart (San Diego)
Operations manager for a trucking company (San Diego)
Sheriff's Deputy (San Diego)

Wow 18 jobs between 1983 to now (and I've never been fired or laid off), pretty amazing when you consider that 3 of those jobs account for 16 years (Deputy-9, Navy-4, Trucking company-3).

Paper boy for the local city paper Irvine World News for a few months
Jack in the Box cashier for about 8 months
School job where I would get assigned random jobs from departments at UC Santa Cruz for about 6 months
Target cashier/guest service for almost 2 years while going to school at UC San Diego
Assistant for my Dad's friends warehouse

And at my most recent company, i've gone from technical support to helpdesk technican to network administrator in the 3 years i've been here.

I'm only 25... and don't see myself changing companies anytime soon.

Happy Birthday!

1st summer job was graphic designer (high school)
1st non-summer job was bagger/cashier at supermarket (high school)
I had three different internships through college
Out of college I got the first "real" job I'm in now (seven years this summer)
A friend and I ran a design company for a few years (but not anymore, eventhough our license is good through this year)

So, up to 8, depending on how you look at it.

My first jobs were just a bunch of temp work (mostly data entry) until I landed with my current company. Started as an entry level temp and then was brought on full time doing the same job. I've been promoted 4 times in the 5 years I've been here and I hope to stay for the rest of my career.

Stock associate for a large office supply store chain - (1 year high school)
Package sorter/bulk handler for UPS (2.5 years college)
Manufacturing tech for a copier toner plant (7 months - worst ****ing job ever - only one I ever left without notice)
Telemarketing for Great Expectations dating service (1 month - frickin' hilarious)
Inventory control tech for hospital Med/Surg supply department (1 year)
Research assistant then quickly shipping manager for trademark search firm (2 years)
Technical support, now software testing for a large educational bookstore chain (9 years!!! - present job)

Pretty much all my jobs until my current one were just a way to support myself while I chased down the "musician's dream". I suppose you could call what I have now a career, given the length of time served and the fact I've grown my salary pretty nicely with several promotions over the years. But it's always the same story with me: make more, spend more.

Record store clerk (mall) - this was my only job through high school
Record store assistant manager (mall) - summer before college
Record store clerk (college campus store) - through college
Computer monitor at campus computing center - extra job during schoolyear
Hanging up clothes in the basement of Kohl's - extra summer job
Record company merchandising rep - part-time during college
Radio station advertising sales - first job out of college only for a few months
Record company Field Marketing Rep - started part-time, eventually made full-time (about 3 years total)
Record label Marketing Manager - 2 years, then job eliminated in downsizing
Record company artist development rep - east coast then left for same position at diff. company
Record comapny artist development rep - for one year then company merged and laid off
Account manager for publication company - only about 6 months then left for my current company (back in Music)
Account Manager (sales rep) for indie music distribution company - 7 years then promoted to current position
Sales Manager for music distribution company

So I guess that is 14. It is funny because I pretty much worked for the same company from the time I was 16- 21. Then I changed jobs quite a lot in my twenties, but in my 30's I have worked for just one company again.

The music business pretty much sucks. Tons of downsizing, mergers, lay-offs. yuck. I have actually found more job stability in the indie sector.

I really want to transition to a new career but I am at a loss at what to do. I know I could probably do sales in another field, but I don't really like sales. I would much rather have a job where my performance is not measured by whether someone else says yes or not. I actually enjoy the nerdier part of it, working with facts and figures. Anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking about this the other day, especially in terms that I basically have zero references available if I ever have to go looking for another job. Every place I've ever worked has essentially either been sold or demolished.

* Grocery Store (Stockboy) - The store no longer exists and the building has been demolished.

* Video Store (Clerk/Manager) - Two store chain no longer exists, thanks to Blockbuster.

* Insurance Call Center - The company was sold and is now no longer in business.

* Movie Theater - The entire chain was sold and all three local locations were closed, then demolished.

* Local ABC Affiliate - Sold. No longer exists.

* Cell Phone Call Center - The company was sold twice and the call center is now no longer in business.

* PGA Tour Productions - Entire department fired after 9/11. No longer exists.

* Local CBS Affiliate - Ok, so those bastards are still there. But there is ZERO chance in hell I'd go to them for a reference. I wouldn't go to them and they wouldn't give me one if I did. Bastards.

* Current job (nearly four years and things are good).

Clerk/Management for 2 retail companies in UK
Waiter/Shift Manager @ Ruby Tuesdays - been there over 5 years now. Perfect for the lifestyle and family life I have so all is good (for now)

So, in 15 years this is my 4th job.

I'd say I was pretty dependable, but if the bosses at my current job don't do something about getting me into management soon, I'm off.

I'm 26. Started working 2 days after my 16th birthday.

Grocery Store (Little Mom and Pop outfit) - 4 years
Field Services Technician (Corporate offices of a building supply company) - 5 years
Sheriff's Office - 3 years and 10 months.

The first two overlapped a couple of years. Spent the first two years at the sheriff's office as a 911 operator before becoming a deputy.
