DVDtalk's Biggest Loser: January

Let's start the new year off with health in mind. Use this thread to post your weight and (if you know it) your body fat percentage, plus any goals you have and before/after photos you take along the way.

Let's also use this monthly thread to ask questions, post successes and setbacks, and to give each other motivation to stay healthy and attain the goals we've set.

The winner of the January challenge (based on % of body weight lost) also gets bragging rights here at DVDtalk plus a month of free posting anywhere on the site.

Good luck, everyone, and best of health in 2008!

We bought a new Taylor weight scale that reads body fat.

I don't think we bought the best one, but it's supposed to be pretty accurate.

I gave away my camera, so I don't have pictures.
But I frighteningly look a lot like OP except my belly sticks out a little bit more.<table border=0 cellspacing=1><tr><td width=100></td><td width=100><b>Initial Weigh-In</b></td><td width=100><b>May 2008 Goal</b></td><td><b>Current<br>Weight-In</b></td></tr>

(post copied from earlier thread) I'll get an exact weight and some pix up sometime soon.

I'm in! I'm 6'2" and somewhere over 300 pounds right now (my wife's scale doesn't go high enough ). Liver&Onions' suggested site looks interesting, but FitDay looks good too, and there's a setting to make your individual journal public. I've signed up and here's my public journal link:

http://www.fitday.com/WebFit/Public...r=AGuyNamedMike

We should probably vote and choose one of these sites to help us track. I like the interface for FitDay better, but DailyPlate has a custom groups function that would help us stay together. I created the group "DVDTalk Otter Pharm Biggest Loser's Competition 2008" there and can invite anyone who wants in and even promote them to administer the group.

Wait a minute. Your goal is to lose 1.2 pounds by May? You can do that with one good dump! That is just silly. Weight normally fluctuates by 1-2pounds a day anyway.

/me scurries off to Costco to pick up a monster pack of enema kits

I think I can easily lose 5 pounds which I think will only take a month at the gym. However, I am hoping to add then, 5 pounds of muscles over the next 3 months.

So that's why in my goals, it's really the % fat that I'm concentrating on. I'm trying to "convert" fat weight into muscle weight. Who knows, maybe I'll drop 15 pounds easily and not gain any muscle mass. I'll have to adjust my goals as I see how I am progressing.

Immediately though, I just have to get my ass to the gym first... and also get a camera to post my picture for LiquidSky can post another

No pics, but weigh around 240 pounds, goal is to get down to 180 by year end, so that's 5 pounds/month, but I'm sure I'll hit a plateau sooner or later. We'll see.

Similar goals here. I'm only 5'8" and weigh about 155, which isn't bad, but I want to lose some of the fat and gain muscle so I don't anticipate my weight changing much.

I'm using "The Abs Diet" to help guide me in my healthy new year. One of the things it suggests tracking is your waist-to-hip ratio. This is determined by measuring your waist at your belly button and your hips around your butt, then divide your waist by your hips.

Mine is:

Waist: 40
Hips: 40.5
Ratio: .987

According to the book, you want a ratio under .92.

BTW, I'm at 6'1", 225, looking to get down to about 200 this year. Body Fat is about 29.5% according to my Tanita scale. Want to get closer to 20-23%.

I'm in.

I gained weight this year, mostly because I stopped exercising after a back injury but also because I stopped caring about what I ate. I was already chubby, so I need to do something to feel healthy again and look better. I just joined Calorie King to keep track of food and exercise so that'll be my plan. I aim to lose about 50 pounds. No pics for now, But I'll add some later.

Age: 36
Height: 5' 6"
Weight: 197 lbs
Body Fat: high as fuck
BMI: ?

Ive gained some fat over the past few months, and was just ridiculous since Thanksgiving... Im at about 230 I think and want to get back to my "fighting weight" which is between 200-210. Exercising for me isn't the problem, its my fucking diet that always seems to shit the bed. Sticking to a 40-30-30 ratio and going to try and do it Paleo style as close as I can.

I'm not participating, but I wish you all the best of luck and will follow your progress. It's fantastic that you are all setting these goals, and you all know that it's a common resolution that often falls flat. Hopefully this thread will give you all the support and motivation you need to keep plugging away. And remember, even if you don't reach your goal... every pound that you DO lose is one pound less than before. But keep at it, and I wish you all the best!

OK, so I'm adding one of the only recent "head to toe" pics I could find of my fatty McFat self. Damn I have a long way to go! Bring on the salads and lean protein.
