Why do people buy their own drinks on their birthday?

Friday's my birthday and I was planning out my drinking evening while having a beer in the shower when this question occured to me. The last 3 or 4 parties I've been to at the bar I hang out at have had either a 1/2 or 1/4 barrel bought by the birthday guy or girl. This makes absolutely no sense to me. Are they so insecure that no one will come out on thier birthday they feel they have to provide free drinks? I hardly have any friends and all of them stopped out to the bar last year on my birthday, even the guy who's married with a preggo wife and is never allowed to leave except for work. I drank free all night and sure as hell didn't buy a barrel. Do I just have exceptionally cool friends or what?

Holy crap! You buy beer by the barrels??!?! That's hardcore!

I don't know anyone who buys their own drinks on their birthdays! Supposed to be the other way around!

It's only hardcore in Wisconsin if you drink it by yourself.

If your friends know it's your birthday, and they take you out to a bar to celebrate, it seems like they should (at least be offering to) buy your drinks.

If you are telling people about your birthday and inviting them to accompany you to the celebration, it seems a little obnoxious to me, to invite people to celebrate YOU, and then EXPECT them to pay for your drinks as well.

It's never expected. I will usually just tell people to expect free drinks. Last b-day, I just went to my favorite place, and people just bought me drinks, they knew it was my birthday, I never would expect it. It's just happens that way.

I usually get together with my friends and we go out to dinner (everyone pays), and then the b-day person gets their drinks covered by the group. It is pretty informal, whenever people order drinks they check with the bday person. We did go out one year where there were a few people's bdays....so we just bought rounds of shots.

Not sure, I never pay for my own drinks.... Drinking is not a priority to me and not something I waste my money on so on the occasion I do go out drinking it is because I was harassed into it by friends with the promise of free drinks all night. Every once in awhile I will buy a round, but rarely. Now I am very liberal about picking up the check for dinner, so I figure it all evens out.

To be fair, I was 21 and she wasn't, so I didn't have much of a choice.

I still didn't get any.

How about this?

A few years ago I went out with my roommate and a couple of girls to have some drinks for my birthday... and I ended up pay the bar tab. That's not exactly terrible. Except that they insisted I go out with them, and he didn't even mention he didn't have any money until the bill came due. That made me salty, also because it wasn't the first time something like this happened.

That was the last time I celebrated my birthday with him... well, I don't do the heavy drinking thing for birthdays anymore anyway.

There's nothing wrong with buying drinks for everyone. [geek] Did you read The Hobbit? That's the way hobbits do it, the birthday boy throws the party. [/geek] They're celebrating their birthday and want to have people join in their celebration; it's not necessarily "I don't have enough friends so I have to bribe people with drinks."

you guys have never heard of kegs being referred to as barrels? kegs are either half full or 1/4 full. the would be too damn heavy if filled any more. (i would have quit my barbacking job a long time ago if this was the case)

The same reason why I buy my own crack on my birthday.

I want what I want when I want it!

In your post, you didn't say it was your friends buying you drinks, you said
I just went to my favorite place, and people just bought me drinks
