Donate or Garage Sale?

We are donating an oven, microwave and dishwasher to the Salvation Army and I wondered:

Would it more beneficial to either donate the items to charity and get the tax write off or sell it at a garage sale?

Would it even be worth the effort to have a garage sale with items selling for dirt cheap?

Anyone have any insight on this?

If it is just those couple of BIG items. I would take an add out in the local paper in the "Bargian Basement" or "$200 or less" section of the classified.

You will get tons of calls if you put them in there for $50-100 each.

CASH is King!! always take the CASH

It depends on how much you would sell it for vs. the value you would give it for tax purposes. I would rather have the cash.

Have a garage sale first and donate whatever doesn't sell.

Anyone who has ever held a garage sale knows the answer to this one - donate it, sell it privately, or throw it away.

Numanoid is right...do ANYTHING but have a yard sale. They are not worth your time or effort. I had one about a month ago, and I will never have another one. I ended up donating everything that was left over from the yard sale, and i should have just packed up my van and took it all there to begin with.

Yea, sell them online. If you give these to Salvation Army or Goodwill they're just going to turn around and rape low-income shoppers with an inflated price.

I'd donate. It makes you feel like you did something good for the world. Well that & you get the tax write off.

Friends, Craigslist, donate. That's the order I go in. As I get older, less of my friends need things, so I'll throw it up on Craigslist for a week or two. After that, I'll take it to Goodwill or something.
