This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System...

Does anyone else remember happily watching cartoons only to be suddenly threatened with WWIII?

Was this ever actually used for any purpose other than scaring kids?

I didn't find it scary, just annoying.

I remember that.

I remember scanning the horizon sometimes, looking for mushroom clouds.

They still do that, don't they, only now it's an annoying buzz sound?

Yeah it's the Emergency Alert System now. Same things, just some different sound effects.

Well at least that guy in the clip has a "trustworthy" voice. When I was a kid, I heard it being used by a James Earl Jones clone (i.e, Vader) so of course, this would always freak me out.

The ironic thing is (as far as I know) the system was not used on 9/11 in New York when it probably would've been kind of useful. Feel free to correct me.

Yeah, I remember those things and thinking that this could be the big one. I know some people joke, but during the cold war, which was still going on in the late 70s and 80s, that was a scary ass sound to hear.

"This has been a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The broadcasters of your area in voluntary cooperation with the Federal, State and local authorities have developed this system to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual emergency, the Attention Signal you just heard would have been followed by official information, news and the explicit instruction to place your head firmly between your knees and to kiss your ass goodbye. This concludes this test of the Emergency Broadcast System."

Yeah, right. The NPF (Nuclear Protection Factor) of that desk is roughly 1.00000001, compared to just sitting there and kissing your ass goodbye.

I've heard the Emergency Broadcast System (radio) used for weather emergencies (tornados.)

In this day and age they should ditch the TV emergency signal and instead switch the cell phone emergency signal. Many more people are walking around with cell phones at any given moment than are home watching TV (unless Paris Hilton is doing something).

But seriously I think they should do both. I wouldn't mind a 'Test Emergency Text Message' once every couple of months as long as it is agreed I don't get charged for them.

This is already an option for Amber Alert

I remember those when I was younger...I actually saw one a few months ago too!! Mine were not as nice looking as that one. There was no picture like that, just the guys voice.

The result of "duck and cover", in the case of an atomic bomb, is mooning the future.

At least it felt like there was something you could do.
