Yeah. I know, I know, what a terrible position to be in, but WTF?

How do you decline without quitting or threatening to quit or anything completely business stupid or childish?

I actually just had a friend go through this same thing (I left the company, she was offered my job but didn't really want it). She came up with what she thought was an unreasonable amount of money to ask for the promotion so either she didn't have it but didn't turn it down or ended up with a bunch of $$ that made the move a little more bearable.

is the position more responsibility & money, or just more of a pain in the ass? If it was going to require more time from you, maybe you could play the my kids are at a delicate stage, needing lots of time for their activities etc, and you couldn't fully commit the required energy at this point blah blah..

I wish I had turned down the promotion to the position I am currently in.

I never felt like I couldn't have said "no", however.

I wasn't even offered the promotion. I was told I was going, and that was that. I was traded away before I knew I was up for grabs. After putting up with way too much crap for way to long, I finally found a department I really liked working in, and they pulled the rug out from under me.

I'm on my second day at the new job now. I'm supposed to be getting a raise, but we'll see how that works out, as my new position is being reclassified.

It's no more money, it an increase in responsibility and an increase in PAIN IN THE ASS factor. The person that has the job now will answer to me instead of being fired, that makes it even worse.

There is no incentive what-so-ever for me to take it. I am not power hungry and do not care about the title or how many people I have working under me. I just really don't care about things like that, or how big my office is and how many windows I have, argh, I don't want it.

I should also add that in the last 2 years, 3 other people I know have failed at the job (including the one there now that will be demoted)

I got the old, well you are the only one we know that could even begin to take this on and you need to do it for the team crap.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH - I don't want to spend my life with all this stress and working 70 hours a week - been too lucky, too long, I guess I get the ax now

I am pretty sure I can find a job with another group internally within a couple weeks.

Now I have to weigh which is more of a pain in the ass, this promotion or moving to a completely new group.

Right now I am leaning new group, gettting resume ready and everything (my res is so out of date )

The unknown is sometimes better than the known

They took away every reason I had to stay at this point and offered no new reasons to stay.

I guess telling them you're not interested isn't an option.
