O&A on XM - Part II (not for 30 days they aren't - SUSPENDED!)

Lets start O&A thread Part 2, with some suspension news.

From the XM site....

Opie & Anthony Update

As you know, XM has suspended Opie & Anthony and ceased all broadcast of The Opie & Anthony Show on The Virus - XM 202 for 30 days, effective May 15, 2007.

Our decision to suspend O&A is a direct result of their May 14th broadcast where it became clear to XM that they do not appreciate the seriousness of last week's on air comments. We give our on air talent creative freedom, however we expect them to take this responsibility seriously.

XM values you as a subscriber, and we are committed to providing you with a service that advocates artistic freedom. We regret any inconvenience this 30-day suspension may cause you.

In the meantime, Ron & Fez will air in place of The O&A Show on XM 202.

If you have comments or questions, please email us at [email protected]

This is really becoming ridiculous now. The next thing they'll go after is internet radio and podcasts. I wonder how much this suspension has to do with the merger though.

Link to Part I???

I don't listen to them or follow their thread, so I'm in the dark as to what they did.

I'm sure this is already in Part I, but since this thread is starting this way I figure it is ok to be redundant and not search...

What were the on-air comments and the proof they don't appreciate the seriousness of them?

Part 1 was closed a while ago. When searching for it so I could post in the thread I noticed it and started a Part II.

Oh fer cryin' out loud.

They had a homeless miscreant on as a guest, and he was talking about wanting to rape Condi Rice and they were egging him on. Although this occurred on the XM portion of their show, they apologized for it the next day on terrestrial radio. They then joked about it a few days later, but didn't repeat the comments.

This is ridiculous. Sure, it was in bad taste, but you don't take people off the air ON A PAID SATELLITE STATION WHERE EXPLICIT CONTENT IS ADVERTISED for inane crap like this.

Is this in regards to the comments that Hillary Clinton and other political figures should be raped etc. I heard they had a guest or a bum on (I assume a real bum) on saying things like that.

You can't search for "O&A" here, less than 4 characters. But if you go off-site and Google site:dvdtalk.com, you'll get the thread.

Here's the link: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=451604
And yes, it was closed back in 10/06 for length. No clue there as to last week's happenings.

Yes, it was a crazy homeless guy who made the comments. In regards to Opie and Anthony not considering the "seriousness of the situation", I guess XM was pissed at them for talking about it and bashing the media and people like Sharpton who are going after them.

XM subscribers should cancel their subscriptions for 30 days, or until they bring O&A back, whichever is sooner.

Although I assume there's a year long contract when you sign up for XM?

I called as soon as the word came down.

If you cancel, you have to pay an activation fee when you re-up. For 3 radios that is a tough pill to swallow.

I called and asked for a credit for my 3 radios for 30 days. When they asked why I told them "without O&A, XM is not worth it to me. Would you rather I cancel?"

They credited me for 30 days for 3 radios.

I like Ron and Fez even better than O and A these days, so no canceling here.

Just because its on satellite doesnt mean you can say anything you want.

Did anyone really buy into that? Seriously?

Forget the Stern conspiracy theories or Stern comparisons. The point here is that the boys did something completely tasteless on their paid satellite show - no one who listens to that show regularly should have been surprised. If you're offended by that stuff, the O&A show isn't for you. To take them off the air for it is ridiculous.

The boys stood up for other radio personalities, whether they liked them or not, when people brought pressure on stations to suspend or fire them for comments or jokes made on the air. They lambasted Sharpton for his hypocrisy on the Don Imus issue.

Agree, I knew what I thought the comments were about based upon a mention on Stern, and didn't even mention details in hopes of not causing a fight.

Did you listen to the clip? Tell me what was said that warrants taking them off the air. This type of humor is what XM pays O&A to do; it's certainly not their whole act but it's a part of it. Now XM pretends to be shocked? Stupid.

Let's not forget that FCC regulations don't apply to satellite radio - yet.

I sent an e-mail to XM over this. I've been a subscriber for 4 years (when I signed up, they had major fanfare over the fact that they were close to getting their 1 millionth subscriber). I'm not gonna cancel, because I'm a) paid up for a while, and b) I can't listen to regular radio anyways. But suspending them for a month for this is ridiculous.

They offered me 3 free months when I called to cancel, but I turned them down.
