NEW DELHI - An Indian court issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shelty on Thursday for kissing at a public function, media reports said.

Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants in the northwestern city of Jaipur after a local citizen filed a complaint charging that the public display of affection _which he called an "an obscene act" offended local sensibilities, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Last week Gupta subpoenaed television footage of the event.

Such cases against celebrities often filed by publicity seekers are common in conservative India. They add to a backlog of legal cases that has nearly crippled the country's judicial system.

It was not immediately clear how the warrant would affect Gere, a frequent visitor to India.

Under Indian law a person convicted of public obscenity faces up to three months in prison, a fine or both.

Heck, you can't even see his lips. For all we know, he didn't kiss her at all, just nibbled on her ear.

If public kissing is such a big deal, how could Gere not have known that? I think he's an ass for not respecting their culture.

Fuck their 'culture' of illogical fear of public displays of affection. Stupid fears like that need to be shaken up, if people want to not be oppressed anymore.

If a simple kiss in public, will fuel others to fight for their right to do so. That's a good thing and is one step towards normalacy.

Now what if it were a country that treated women as inhuman possessions, to be used and abused as the male pleases. Would one not want to stand up for the womens rights and speak out. Or would you want to 'respect' the 'culture' and let that barbaric way of treating them continue to prospere?

Just something to think about when it comes to 'respecting other cultures'. Where do we draw the line and say enough is enough?

Gere and the gorgeous model should not apologize, and the fear mongers in control should move along and grow up. There are worse things in the world than a kiss or holding hands in public.
