Mother in Salem faces charges of prostitution

April 7, 2007

Police charged a Salem mother with prostitution after investigators said her husband told patrolmen she had transformed the family basement into a dominatrix lair to earn extra money.

The husband talked about Paula Webb's bondage business after the couple got in an argument on March 16, police said. They said Stephen Webb, 54, showed them ropes, whips, a leather mask, and other accessories in a mock dungeon.

Detective William Jennings went undercover and answered an ad posted online.

With her 6-year-old and 9-year-old upstairs, Webb led the detective into the basement and agreed to have sex with him for $150, Jennings said yesterday. A moment later, Webb recognized him. "You look like a cop I used to know," she said, according to Jennings. "I said, 'Yeah, I'm Bill Jennings; you're under arrest.' "

Webb, 42, was charged with sexual conduct for a fee and pleaded not guilty Thursday, according to the Essex district attorney's office. She was released without bail.

There are so many things wrong with this, I don't know where to begin. Actually, I do. 1) Don't turn tricks while the kids are in the house.

Well, at least they didn't charge her with witchcraft.

Probably hurts the kids more to arrest her and plast her name and face all over the news. This was the lead story on all the local news stations.

Shouldn't the police be worried about the violent crimes and rapists?

ABC really needs to keep Alan Shore ripping the stupid laws in MA.

Wonder what's the story on the husband - he must have helped somehow - build the dungeon, pay for toys, etc. How come nothing happens to him?

On the other hand, I can just imagine what things would be like if the husband was the dom and his client was an undercover female officer - think headlines along the lines of "Man arrested on attempted assault, torture, and imprisonment. Bail set at $750,000."

Well, she did offer him a BJ for $150. If she'd only offered to whip him, it would have been legal.

I remember seeing this story on the local news. She is really ugly, I'm surprised she had any business.

WTF, what kind of mother is that. What a disgrace. The husband should have took the kids and gotten the hell out of there a long time ago.

Well, YEAH, but I'm guessing he knew all about it and was into the $$$$$. I doubt he's an innocent party here.

Okay, I feel stupid now. I missed the part about the argument.

There was plenty of violence, you just had to pay extra for it.

Converting a basement into a dominatrix lair sounds like a good idea for a show on TLC.

This week on Trading Spaces:

Paula & Stephen, an alternative lifestyle couple in Salem, will be converting their neighbor's sub-level basement into a fully functional dungeon with the help of designer Doug Wilson and carpenter Carter Oosterhouse.

Will Gina & Paul Rogers love their neighbor's flair for bondage-inspired design? Tune in this Thursday at 9 p.m.
