Who's stronger - firemen or cops?

I remember all these funny fights on the tv show Rescue Me and these cop vs firemen toughman fights I used to watch on FX.

I have always thought that firemen were much stronger than cops, but maybe the cops here can explain why that's not the case. I know that some departments were trying to improve the fitness level because of the group health insurance costs.

Thoughts?

I think the general nature of the work would lead one to think that firemen are more in shape at least. A fireman's job is more physically intensive than a cop's.

However, a fireman isn't trained to take someone down, are they?

<-- Firefighter

I weigh 205lbs, am 5'10" with a size 17 1/2 neck, I am broad and have the form of a linebacker. I also have a stomach but a lot of muscle, and get throw them back like the rest of them. But each side has there share of muscleheads and couch potatoes.

To be honest both sides have guys who really take care of their bodies, and both sides have people who are completely out of shape. I work with a few guys who are really into body building. They could lift a car off of someone, they are huge. But they couldn't run for the life of them. There are also some guys who run a ridicolous amount, one guy's average workout is 45 min on the stepper with a 45lb weight vest. Some guys take part in 5 and even 15ks a few times a year. There are also guys on my job that can recline and eat an entire cheesecake to themselves and still be hungry, and not manage to get up more then twice in a shift. So I Think both sides have their strong, fast, and fat.

There are a lot of sayings and arguments between cops and firefighters. Such as:

There are only two jobs that you can get paid on your back and one is illegal and the other is a firefighter.

Trade in the gun for a pillow.

firefighters are trained to wear 60-80lbs of gear be in 300+ degrees and other adverse conditions while performing intense amount of physical activity, and this could possibly be after climbing X number of floors.

Firemen by far. Whenever I see a fireman in NYC, they look like they are in great shape. There are so many lazy fat ass cops around the city it ain't funny.
From what I understand the police have to take a physical every so often and if they cannot fail. How some of these cops pass amazes me.

Granted police need to be in great shape to run down and handle perps.

But I've done some fire-fighter training. And when you're wearing protective gear, along with O2-breathing equipment and you're handing a charged hose... well, you'll get a renewed respect for their job. Plus I was in a controlled fire on level ground.

My hats off to both jobs but I have to vote "firemen".

I haven't seen many firemen spending their work hours hanging out at donut shops, so I gotta go with firemen.

And what about the whole donut shop angle? Why won't anyone address that?

Yeah. Iíve never seen a fat guy with cardio vascular disease that could lift the mighty weight of a handgun.

I've seen cops run after people on TV. In real life I mostly see them cuffing homeless guys. (To be fair, all I've seen firefighters do in real life is drive around loudly.)

I actually haven't seen any cops do that in real life either.

In the end I would say that not having been there and not knowing departmental limits on how far you can let yourself go before being dismissed that I am not qualified to make the distinction. I vote ninja.

I've run down plenty of people. It's not just a TV thing, that's BS. Bad guys see cops, they run. I've caught a few and lost a few.

I'm in decent shape and I try to stay that way. On the whole though, PAID firefighters are probably in better shape. I've got no problem admitting it. The volunteers that I generally work with are a WHOLE different story, though.

Who's stronger - firemen or cops?

On May 20 of last year, this question was answered when NYFD beat NYPD 16-6 in the Fun City Bowl.
