My favorite ones ever were when Sonic had got added to the second Super Smash Brothers, and when Skiny Puppy formed a new band with three unidentified guys, the link was to them with NSync.

Last year I convinced about 25 people that George Romero had died, ten of them even had a Marathon of the Living Dead that night in memory.

I think I've mentioned this before, but a local classic rock station (101.5 KGB) always pulls something whenever April 1 falls on a weekday.

Their most infamous one involved a "breaking news" story that the space shuttle was being diverted to one of our local airports (not our main international one but a smaller one that handles private planes). Next thing they know, people are driving to the airport to watch! Not only were people deciding to miss work but some didn't have their kids go to school so they could witness the shuttle landing. HUNDREDS of cars arrived at the small airport... they had to call police for traffic control and to figure out what the heck was going on.

As the shuttle was getting closer, the station was broadcasting the chatter between the shuttle and ground control (and they did a very nice job of it). Just as the shuttle was "touching down" they let the cat out of the bag. Some people were angry for being duped. The city wanted to charge the station to pay for the police work.

But the joke was good enough to get mentioned on CNN (even though they mispronounced the DJ's name). Also, if you go to Wikipedia "April Fools' Day" it's listed in the "by radio stations" section.

Oh, the best part of this was that the real shuttle wasn't orbiting during this.

Here's another one of their April Fools' Day jokes:

The station had a KBG Card that you used to get discounts from retailers around the city. They announced that if you took the card to any local Radio Shack you could get a "Donmin Plug" for only $10. You could then take you plug connect it to your TV and you could WATCH the radio show live.

Of course, as bewildered Radio Shack employees had no clue people would try multiple locations to find the plug. Eventually they let the cat out of the bag by mentioning that "Donmin" spelled backward is "nimnod".

That's really funny..... it would be even funnier if it had been a "Dormin Plug", IMO.

Marion Barry and me: Great minds think alike

Having argued for years that mid-January was a dumb time for the Martin Luther King holiday, I was pleased to see support for my view from former Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry, who was definitely one of the most fun mayors this country has had (assuming you didn't have to live in his city), and he knows that the dead of winter is not a fun time for MLK day. The Washington Post reports:

A committee appointed by D.C. Council member Marion Barry has moved the District's annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade from its traditional date near King's birthday in wintry January to the warmer month of April, when the civil rights leader was assassinated. This year, according to Barry's office, the parade will be held April 1 -- April Fool's Day...

Chuck Bowens, a member of the parade committee, said the group voted unanimously last month to postpone the parade because the members were worried about subjecting children and "senior VIPs" such as Wilhelmina Rolark and Barry himself to January's often frigid weather. Last year, days after Barry was hospitalized for flulike symptoms, the parade was canceled at the last minute because of plunging temperatures.

At a meeting just before Christmas, Bowens said, the parade committee began discussing last year's cancellation and "started talking about, 'What's the rain date?' And someone said, 'What about the date of King's death? That's in warm weather.' And it was kind of like a veil being lifted, and the whole discussion turned toward that."...

Reaction to the change has been fast and, mostly, furious... Aside from the disrespectful symbolism of remembering King on April Fool's Day, Pannell said, it makes no sense to hold a parade that marks King's murder. "If you want to commemorate an assassination, that should be something that is done with some solemnity," Pannell said. "You don't commemorate a person's assassination with marching bands."

Well, that's why I've suggested moving it to August, a month crying out for a holiday, which could commemorate Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28, 1963.

As a kid I used to just put a rubber band around the sprayer on the kitchen sink. Then I'd sit patiently at the kitchen table until my mother would turn on the sink and get soaked... hahahaha....
