This is not really bad news for people that hate the Atkins diet as past threads indicate that nothing will keep them from their beliefs that meat is bad.

CHICAGO (AP) -- The low-carb, high-fat Atkins diet gets high marks in one of the biggest, longest head-to-head studies of popular weight-loss plans, beating the Zone, the Ornish diet and even U.S. guidelines. Even so, critics say the results show how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off.

Overweight women on the Atkins plan lost more weight over a year than those on the low-carb Zone diet. And they had slightly better blood pressure and cholesterol readings than those on the Zone; the very low-fat, high-carb Ornish diet, and a low-fat, high-carb diet similar to U.S. government guidelines.

Stanford University researcher Christopher Gardner, the lead author, said the study shows that Atkins may be more healthful than critics contend.

But the study isn't a fair comparison because by the end, few women were following any of the diets very strictly, critics argue, although those in the Atkins group came the closest.

The study "had a good concept and incredibly pathetic execution," said Zone diet creator Barry Sears. (translation= We didn't win )

"It's a lot easier to follow a diet that tells you to eat bacon and brie than to eat predominantly fruits and vegetables," said Dr. Dean Ornish, creator of the Ornish diet. (And it apparently does them more good, according to the study )

Atkins followers lost about 10 pounds on average at 12 months, versus 3.5 pounds for the Zone dieters.

Women on the Ornish diet lost almost 5 pounds on average and those on the national guidelines plan lost almost 6 pounds. Scientifically, those 12-month results weren't different enough from the Atkins weight loss to rule out the possibility the differences occurred by chance.

The dieters lost the most weight early on, including an average of 13 pounds for the Atkins group at six months - nearly double the closest competitor, the national guidelines diet. After that, most began regaining weight, a trend most noticeable in the Atkins women.

With an average starting weight of about 189 pounds, even losing 13 pounds meant many women remained overweight.

"There's not a ton of weight loss here," Gardner acknowledged. Atkins "isn't the solution for the obesity problem," he said.(but it isn't unhealthy like the non meat eaters say, either)

The study involved 311 women about 40 years old on average and was designed to measure the effectiveness of using a diet book to lose weight. Women were randomly assigned to read one of four diet books. They attended weekly classes for eight weeks where diet questions were addressed, but then were mostly on their own for the next 10 months.

At the end, Atkins women had slightly higher levels of HDL cholesterol, the good kind, and slightly lower blood pressure than those on the other three diets. Gardner said differences in weight loss likely contributed to those results.

Ornish and other naysayers argued that the study doesn't answer a big question about the Atkins diet - whether consistently eating all that fatty food long-term leads to health problems. (translation= we didn't win so watch out because you'll die on the diet that did.)

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

The authors said it's uncertain whether the results would apply to men or older women since none were studied.

The study "shows that nothing works very well," said Yale University food policy researcher Kelly Brownell. His book promoting diet and lifestyle changes similar to national guidelines was used in the study. (indluding his own book, no doubt. )

"To me, it just screams out for the need to prevent obesity," Brownell said.

The results echo a Harvard study published last year involving thousands of women, which also suggested that a low-carb high-fat diet might be more heart-healthy than previously thought, although it relied on women's memories of what they had eaten over two decades.

Also, those who ate fat and carbs from vegetables rather than animal sources had lower heart disease risks in the Harvard study.

Dr. David Katz of the Yale Prevention Research Center and author of several weight control books, said the new study presents little new information and called it "much ado about nothing."

Nurse Jackie Eberstein, whose consulting company promotes the Atkins diet, said the results are not surprising. Protein makes people feel less hungry and fat helps them feel more full, which makes weight loss easier on Atkins, she said.

Study participant Viola Manges, who does administrative work at Stanford, was assigned to the Atkins group.

Manges, 41, said the diet taught her to make healthier food choices, like eating steamed vegetables instead of mashed potatoes, even if she didn't always follow it strictly.

"I realized I had a bunch of willpower I didn't even know I had," Manges said.

Manges lost roughly 23 pounds, slimming down to a size 6 by the study's end about a year ago. She has regained about 10 to 15 pounds, but said she still tries to follow some of the Atkins recommendations.

The study was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and from the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan.

Okay, I honestly don't care about the Atkins diet, nor do I subscribe to it. But I am amused as hell when something counterintuitive like this gets published. Especially because of all the people that "knew" that people on the diet were hurting themselves, and how they would all get heart attacks, etc.

I, for one, will eat those things with faces!!!

So will I, but I will also put those things with faces on a nice high carb pizza crust

Put me in the camp that says eat whatever the hell you want, just exercise it off and all is well.

Exactly. I eat healthy at home but for lunch at work it's either fast food or a local pizza shop every day. I also go to the gym 4 days a week and am on a stationary bike for an hour every day. Diets are for people who are too lazy to stay in shape through exercise.

I have been arguing for years that Atkins is OK for most people. But I lost 35 pounds since June just by watching my calories and weighing myself every day to make sure I was never slipping too much. Didn't even exercise more.

The people who say Atkins will kill you are pretty funny though.

Yeah, it is all pretty stupid, but I remember in the past when there were threads on here and some people said they loved the Atkins diets while others basically said, "You won't live a full year on it." It was damn near like the thread was about pets or something.

This is what I'm doing now and it's working well. Lost 10 pounds so far.

I lost almost 80 pounds on Atkins in 1997-98. It does work ... but I wasn't following it "to the letter." Anything that decreases caloric intake will work; Atkins just happened to come up with a diet that keeps people from getting too hungry in between meals.

I smiled when I saw this study. I've suspected for a very long time that the Atkins diet was actually good for you. Why? Because it essentially encourages you to eat a more natural diet AND a fresher one.

If you think about the world before industrialization and commercialization, heart attacks (and thus presumably heart diesease) was essentially non-existent. In fact, when you look at historical medical texts, there was pretty much no mention of heart disease or atherosclerosis, which is a VERY easily noticed finding in autopsies. Now think about the diets back then. People ate huge amounts of animal fat, meat and other things we consider unhealthy now. But it was all natural.

What we did NOT have back then was mass produced packaged foods. Take a look on the store shelves - you have to try REALLY hard to find a single product without additives, trans fats, and/or processed sugar (HFCS). Yes, there was grain back then, but it wasn't overly processed like it is today. If you had to make pasta or bread on your own, how often would you eat it? Nowadays, we eat stuff that have shelf lives of months, even years. We process and preserve things so that they stay "clean" and so that bacteria or fungus won't grow on them. Well, if even bacteria and fungus won't grow on our food, should we really be eating it?

Actually, you don't have to decrease your caloric intake. The Atkins diet works on the principle of not driving up your insulin levels from too much blood sugar at once. Insulin increases your fat storage and decreases fat utilization. It's driven up by increased blood glucose. It tells the body, hey, there's plenty of sugar so don't burn any fat because we can use the sugar for energy. At the same time it tells the body, if there's any leftover sugar, store it as fat. Fat and protein do not drive up your blood glucose levels the way carbs such as starch, and of course, sugar does.

The Atkins diet essentially normalizes the metabolism. That's the theory and it actually makes sound biological sense.

I thought this fad was over? My grocery store hasn't had "low carb" stuff on the shelves for months.

Mine still has the stuff on the shelves, but they crossed out "low carb" and wrote "Rachel Ray" with a magic marker.

I lost more weight quickly on Atkins than other other diet I've been on. Atkins tends to work better for those with more stored glucose (i.e., fattybobatties).

However, unlike other zone or GI based diets, you WILL cheat more frequently and with worse results on Atkins. There's only so much breadless hamburgers a dude can eat. The problem with cheating is that you are defeating the very purpose of the diet.

Fortunately, low-carb options today are more plentiful and tastier than they were even 3 years ago. But sometimes, a fella just wants a fucking dinner roll.

I've been on Atkins since Valentines day of this year. Doing pretty damn good on it. ~23 lbs lost so far. I agree with Josh, you can only go so long without craving that damned hamburger bun and greasy fries.

I try to keep those cravings to an extreme minimum which works well for me. Cheating on Atkins for me is more of a pain in the ass though, especially when I think of the first 2 weeks of eating practically nothing but eggs, cheese and meat and what a hassle that was so it deters me from the urge for the junk food.

You mean something is better than the US guidelines?? Im shocked!!! Atkins is a relatively "easy" diet to do just because its basic. The Zone is too hard for people who cant afford to have some chef make their meals for them, and most other diets are too calorie restrictive to stay on once you have lost a few pounds.

Here is a little trick for those on Atkins. When you are having the carb cravings, up your fat intake a little bit. You wont lose a lot, but the fat is a good counter to the carb cravings and you wont be sabotaging the losses from adding the sugar/starch back to your diet. Thats another problem with the Dean Ornish/ US guidelines. They strip way to much dietary fat from our meals.

My favorite snacks on Atkins were a spoonful of peanut butter and a cheddar cheese stick from sargento. Good stuff.

But man, were meals boring. Essentially, an omelette for breakfast, a salad for lunch and a steak/chicken breast for dinner. Every day.

I will share one of my favorite recipes that I invented on Atkins - Atkins Pizza. Basically, you cook salami right to almost crispy, then top with Atkin's pasta sauce, cheese, and veges and finish off in the oven. This was one of my favorite meals.

I tried Atkins for a while, lost some weight, but couldn't stay on such a restrictive diet. I ultimately lost 90 pounds a few years back -- and have kept it completely off -- with Weight Watchers. The difference? Weight Watchers doesn't tell you not to eat any certain food, but rather teaches you how to control portions and focus on eating more healthy foods -- vegetables, fruits, lean meats, whole grains -- and less processed, sugary and fatty foods.

I'm not trying to advertise for them or anything -- you can basically do their same plan without paying them a dime -- but I think their focus on teaching you how to eat better forever is more conducive to keeping weight off after losing it than plans that help you lose a bunch of weight in the short term but can't be sustained as a lifelong method of eating.

low fat is only bad for you if you buy boxed food labeled low fat which means it's high in sugar, corn syrup or something similar. learned this on oprah. only 2 things are used for a thickner. fat or sugar.

if you eat a low fat diet with a lot of fresh veggies and complex carbs you are doing OK

Egads, thats nearly a pound a day. Hope you dont get complications like I did or at very least half is water weight.

This is another successful diet plan. Travolta used it to lose his weight from Pulp Fiction. Basically, he ate whatever he wanted, just half. So he would say go to lunch with Kelly, order a hamburger and fries, and split it with her.

Then he would go home and get to bone one of the hottest women in the game, making me violently angry at the world.

Nothing beats a well-balanced diet, eating what you like (in moderation) and exercising regularly. If you think of it as a "diet" you're setting yourself up for failure, bevuse once you reach your goal you can go "off" your diet and start eating what you like again.
